Your Teacher Said What?!: Defending Our Kids from the Liberal Assault on Capitalism, by Blake Kernen, Joe Kernen

Every morning on CNBC's Squawk Box, Joe Kernen asks challenging questions. And at home he does the same with his young daughter, Blake. What are you learning in school? What TV shows do you like? What message did you get from that movie? When Blake was nine, her answers told Joe that she had already absorbed a distorted view of economics-from her school, pop culture (even animated movies!), and just about everywhere else. She was learning that capitalism is unavoidably immoral, that business people can't be trusted, especially if they run big companies like BP or Wal-Mart, that trade is bad because it hurts American workers, and that no matter how bad things get, the government will always bail us out. Joe admits that he shouldn't have been surprised in an era when Washington casually takes over car companies and spends a trillion dollars "stimulating" the economy. But he was outraged and determined to do something about it. If he couldn't fix our education system or Hollywood, at least he could teach Blake how capitalism really works, and why it's worth defending. He started by asking her to write down phrases she didn't understand ("What's physical stimulus?"). That led to discussions of some tricky ideas, like credit and the time value of money. In theory a dollar today is always worth more than a dollar next year-but not to someone whose purchases are always paid for by someone else. Joe and Blake talked about the pluses (small) and minuses (huge) of unions-including the unionized teachers who disparage the free enterprise system that pays their salaries. They investigated the complicated process by which even the simplest manufactured items get made, without anyone directing from above. They puzzled out the truth about so-called fair trade: Rather than help poor farmers, it helps keep farmers pooor. They learned the differences between Europe and America, and why free health care isn't really free. And they discovered what nine-year-olds have in common with grown-up progressives: Both love to regulate private behavior and think that anything bad-like smoking or eating too much fast food-should be prohibited by law. Ultimately, Joe convinced Blake that capitalism isn't about greed; it's about freedom. As she writes in one of her sections: "When I have to go to the store to buy a net for my aquarium (I have puffer fish) I can find a lot of nets, but no one told the store which ones to put on the shelf, and no one told the companies that make the nets how many to make, and no one told the companies that deliver the nets when to bring them. Or rather, everyone told them. Millions of ordinary people deciding what to buy and sell are smarter than even the hundred smartest people in the world."

Great Ideas in the Wrong Book
By Michael Pauwels
Thank you, Joe. I have enjoyed my morning coffee with you for years and I when you starting talking about your book I was interested. But when Blake appeared on Squawk Box with you one morning, she sold me. My son is 13, and I too am trying to educate him in economics in the face of wrongheaded indoctrination.

I have three small points about the book: First de Tocqueville wrote two centuries ago, not three. Second, water containing fifteen parts per million of oil is 99.9985 percent (not 99.985%) pure. Lastly, your asterisks are too small! It's frustrating when you get to the bottom of the page and find a footnote, and then can't find the passage the note refers to.

But the biggest problem I have with your book is that you wrote the wrong one.

You make five very important points:
1. Free market capitalism makes the pie bigger and while it is shared out unevenly, even the guy with the smallest piece gets more than his share would be of a purely socialist pie.
2. Americans have for most of their history championed free markets, and it isn't an accident that we also are the wealthiest nation on earth.
3. Free market capitalism is the natural state of things and governments only make markets less free.
4. Fair results are not necessarily equal results.
5. If cost-benefit analyses are ignored, we will necessarily be paying more and more for less and less.

Now it is clear that these points are embraced much more by the Right in this country than by the Left. However, by putting Liberals and Progressives in your cross-hairs you put off the very persons that need to understand the lesson. You're preaching to the choir--we need a book that preaches to the sinners.

If you could have made your points without all the Progressive counter examples, you might have reached a few of those teachers who are telling our kids that the world would be better off if we all stopped buying stuff.

To parents and especially to teachers: please read this book. It's not so much anti-liberal as it's pro America. Our kids need this lesson.

Unique approach appreciated
By Dan DuBois
As a dad, I thought this was a great read. So much of the content and dialogue with the fabulous Blake reminds me of my own experiences with my two daughters (who are also fabulous). Those of us bringing up kids have a definite advantage over those of you who don't in understanding the perspective in this book, but it's not necessary if you have the ability to look beyond your own experiences. Parents are attempting to pass along an ethic to future generations in a very challenging time. This book illustrates the challenge of our generation and demonstrates the dialogue all of us parents need to be having with our kids: listen, understand, teach, repeat.

I appreciate those people in a position of having some influence in carrying on the great American traditions who stand up and make a difference. Thanks to Joe and Blake for doing so in a very unique way.

"Try it , You'll like it!!"
By r..pierce
I don't have kids but after listening to my fourteen year old nephew bash America when I hired him to help me in the yard, I couldn't help but fret over where he got these ideas....I agree with others that it is sad that a book like this even needs to be written but I found it be refreshing for anyone who wants to know how capitalism and the free markets work. No "rocket science" here just well explained economics. I will recomend the book to my nephew!!

Would love to have seen some illustrations within the book.

Thanks Joe and Blake!
