The Flavor Thesaurus: A Compendium of Pairings and Ideas for the Creative Cook

I LOVE this book! Now that I have it, I realize I've been waiting for it my entire cooking life. I'm not sure I'd classify myself as a truly creative cook (to qualify, I think at the very least you'd have to have the ability to make food that consistently tastes great, not to mention surprises). But I'm not afraid to experiment wildly - this results in a few great successes, but also many dismal failures. With The Flavor Thesaurus as a guide, I can now experiment and know that my successes will far outnumber the failures. It's also a treasure house of interesting and useful facts about the phenomenon of taste, taste history and enlightening food stories. What a treat to be able to expand my repertoire and pleasantly surprise myself after 45 years of cooking!

Nobody Does it Better!

Like the author's other works, this is a highly meticulous and empirical study of the way contemporary Hollywood films function. Paying close attention to selected films by intensive frame analysis, Bordwell calls into question many contemporary "sibboleths" concerning the status of "post-Hollywood" which he reveals as having more connections with its classical counterpart than most critics believe. His attention to fine detail and references to "American Cinematographer" and screenwriting manuals reveal that he has really done his homework. He challenges his contemporaries to do likewise before they engage in problematic "post" judgements whether they be on the realm of postmodernism, post-colonialism, and post- anything which may become academic equivalents of those formerly fashionable platform shoes or flared trousers that often date episodes of the 1970s British cop series THE SWEENEY.

The references to contemporary Hong Kong cinema and analysis of films such as Johnny To's A HERO NEVER DIES are also valuable components of this book. Like DRAGNET's Sergeant Joe Friday, Bordwell insists that we supply facts based on viewing the evidence ourselves. We should not ignore important empirical aspects before we begin to make meanings that may eventually prove to be non-substantial. Those who choose to avoid the well-researched findings of this book should be issued with speeding tickets and forced to attend a scholarly version of "community service" or "boot camp" involving the detailed viewings of as many films as possible, reading interviews with film directors, and studying important journals such as AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER. This is equally important for those newly converted "film experts" in English Departments of postmodernist persuasion who recently discover Laura Mulvey's 1975 essay on "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" and regard it as a "gospel" truth which remains unaltered today! These feelings are more akin to non-linguistic theological studies and not the highly textual, linguistic based explorations of biblical and near eastern studies that relay on studies in pre-semitic studies, Canaanite, Aramaic, and Arabic studies to reveal key empirical structures influencing "holy writ."

This is another indispensable work by an important scholar that every serious professor and student should learn from even if it only involves better interpretation and a more professional "making of meaning."

About the Author

Robert L. (Bob) Mitchell is a vice president of quality assurance and regulatory affairs for a major medical device company in Orange County, California. Along with his wife of thirtytwo years, he raised three children in a solid Christian home, each of whom experimented with and were addicted to drugs for a time. Bob now has two children and four grandchildren. Bob and his wife Angie were always involved in church and both of their boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. This story is evidence of how drugs and addiction know no boundaries. It could be your story. Bob prays that it is not.

An eye-opener! Couldn't put it down!!!

I'm a career-mom of 2 young children and reading this book was such an eye-opener for me and my husband! The author was so candid, telling it like it is, what it's really like to be around and to love addicted children. The end of each chapter had a "lessons learned" section that was so helpful for reiterating all those key points I didn't want to forget. Raising kids in a good, moral Christian home, being in good schools & neighborhoods with extremely devoted parents, still didn't protect their family from the evil of drug addiction. I am so glad I read this book while my kids are still young.

I was so touched by the love these parents had for their children going on the 'front lines' to help them. It was also so reaffirming to read the author's connection to the spiritual aspect of all the lessons their family endured.

The author's account in Chapter 6 was so vivid, I felt like I was there in that garage too. I simply couldn't put the book down! Having Hannah's personal account in this book was so important...seeing things from her perspective - it made my reading experience even more real. I am rooting for Hannah and I hope we will get a readers' update on her success story.

So many lives can be saved & changed by reading this book. I strongly recommend it to anyone but especially for parents of younger children who may not have any issues yet but who can benefit from the guidance and insight this book offers.

but I was totally pleased to see how their faith sustained them

This book tells a life story that should be a novel. Once you start reading it, you will keep reading to find out what happens. The eye opening part of this book is that it is true life story of a Christian family whose 3 children found their way into drug abuse. I thank God that has a parent of grown children I never had to experience the tragedy of this book, but I was totally pleased to see how their faith sustained them, and shows there is hope in any terrible life event, if you trust in God. Every parent of young children should read this, or if you have a drug abuse problem. Also if you are a person of faith, this book will build that faith. Thank you Bob and Hannah for taking on this difficult task, and creating such a wonderful book

The material is presented in a non-technical language followed by additional sections (in the form of appendices or footnotes) that explain the basic equations and formulas in the theories. This feature is very attractive to readers who want to find out more about the theories involved beyond the basic description for a layperson. The text is designed for scientifically literate non-specialists who want to know the latest discoveries in theoretical physics in a non-technical language. Readers with basic undergraduate background in modern physics and quantum mechanics can easily understand the technical sections.

Part I starts with an overview of the Standard Model of particles and forces, notions of Einstein’s special and general relativity, and the overall view of the universe from the Big Bang to the present epoch, and covers Two-Time physics. 2T-physics has worked correctly at all scales of physics, both macroscopic and microscopic, for which there is experimental data so far. In addition to revealing hidden information even in familiar "everyday" physics, it also makes testable predictions in lesser known physics regimes that could be analyzed at the energy scales of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN or in cosmological observations."

Part II of the book is focused on extra dimensions of space. Professor John Terning - University of California, Davis

John Terning is Professor of Physics at University of California, Davis. He received his Ph.D. from University of Toronto and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University. He was also a researcher at Boston University, University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University. Professor Terning was a staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. John Terning's research Interests include theoretical particle physics, electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetry, cosmology, extra dimensions, and AdS/CFT correspondence.

Professor Itzhak Bars, University of Southern California

Itzhak Bars is a Professor of Physics at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1971 and after postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley he was appointed to the faculty of Stanford University in 1973. He returned to Yale University in 1975 as a faculty member
in the Physics Department, and after a decade he moved to the University of Southern California in 1984 to build a research group in High Energy Physics. He served as the director of the Caltech-USC Center for Theoretical Physics during 1999-2003. His visiting appointments include Harvard University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

Professor Bars is a leading expert in symmetries in Physics, which he applies in much of his research on particle physics, field theory, string theory and mathematical physics in over 200 papers. He is the author of a book on "Quantum Mechanics" and co-editor of the books "Symmetry in Particle Physics" and "Strings '95, Future Perspectives in String Theory". Some of his experimentally successful physics predictions include supersymmetry in large nuclei with even/odd numbers of nucleons, and the weak interaction contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, in the context of the quantized Standard Model, that was confirmed after 30 years. His contributions to the mathematics of supersymmetry are extensively used in several branches of physics and mathematics.

His current interests include String Field Theory, and Two-Time Physics which he originated in 1998. In 2006 he established that all the physics we know today, as embodied in principle in the Standard Model of Particles and Forces, is better described by a two-time field theory in 4 space and 2 time dimensions projected as a shadow on an emergent 3 space and 1 time dimensions. His honors include Fellow of the American Physical Society, the First Award in the Gravity Research Foundation essay contest (shared with Chris Pope), Outstanding Junior Investigator Award by the Department of Energy, and the A. P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship.

A book of unusal freshwater fishes with excellent photos.

When I first came across this book I was stunned by the beautiful photo reproductions of some of the most unusal and interesting freshwater fishes in the world. Because of this book I became very interested and now an owner of a couple of Bichirs (Polyterus) which they cover in detail about various species, care and behavior. If you're a novice freshwater fish hobbyist and want a book that cut to the chase to some very interesting fishes, check this book out and I promised you'll be inspired and discover that some of these fishes are not all that difficult to keep.

Jurassic Fishes is an apt title because most of the covered fish or their immediate ancestors were residents of the periods of the dinosaurs. This book will appeal to aquarists interested in the primitive fish, most notably the Polypterus, Arrowana, Knifes, and oddballs like the African Butterfly. It's also not a bad volume for the evolutionary biologist with a casual interest in fish. You won't find phylogentic trees or cladograms here, but an overview of the evolution and geographical distribution of ancient fish - particularly those of African origin.
Of course, like all the TFH books, the pictures are excellent and printed with their special glossy method that makes the pages stick together, but is well worth the effort once you pry them apart! The "glossiness" of TFH books often accompanies a banal text or downright misinformative writing. That is NOT the case here. These guys know their stuff and present it in an intelligent way. This will be a respected volume in your natural history collection.

Excellent book on aquarium "oddballs".

This is a definite must buy for lovers of aquarium oddballs. There is also a section on the freshwater stingray. The name of the book is of course misleading as it is neither about fossils nor even the evolution of fishes. The only relevance of such a title is the fact that some of the featured species such as the birchir and the lungfish are two of the most ancient group of living fishes.

It uncovers the dark heart of chivalric idealism, injects the political seriousness of epic into the timeless summer of romance, insists on a pagan outlook within a Christian culture, and draws compassion for female suffering from a man’s world. Along with the exquisite anonymous poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Knight’s Tale is the most intricately structured and stylistically pleasing of medieval English romances. For these reasons, it is worthy of its own edition, but what makes it particularly suitable to an illustrated edition is how its narration works by condensing actions and their effects into powerful images and figures. The Knight’s Tale has, in fact, been illustrated many times, but never so thoroughly as in the current edition. Moreover, past illustrations have tended to romanticize or sentimentalize the story, eschewing its most violent and disturbing images. The illustrations in this edition attempt to recapture Chaucer’s mature vision of the noble life, which refuses to deny the tragic aspects of the chivalric equation of love with war and war with honor. Past illustrations have also tended to adopt a Gothic idiom. The illustrations in our edition adopt a Classical Greek idiom drawn from the Parthenon frieze, Attic black- and red-figure pottery, and ancient Greek sculpture—an idiom suitable to the setting of the tale in legendary Athens and Thebes as well as to Chaucer’s humanist impusle.

If considering Theseus’s prosecution of war as a civilizing force, one can point to the fact that he puts an end to Creon’s "tirannye" (941), restoring the bodies of the desecrated dead to the Argive widows. However, if his objective in attacking Thebes is to avenge the widows on Creon, why does he destroy the city after he has already killed him and routed the Theban army, tearing down "wall, and sparre and rafter" (line 990)? The motive is hardly humanitarian, nor even strategic in the military sense since the Theban forces have already been defeated. Its only objective is pillage—to pay off the Athenian troops—and, of course, it is while ransacking the dead that they find Palamon and Arcite still alive among a pile of corpses, a detail unique to Chaucer’s text. While such a practice was endemic to chivalric warfare, it was difficult to contain once started, and it would inevitably produce results inimical to Theseus’s stated purpose for going to war against Thebes, which was to right a wrong done to a group of helpless women. As Maurice Keen writes, the trouble with the practice of looting-as-pay was that to pay off soldiers in this way

was not the same as to disband them. They had to be left at large, still armed with equipment that was their own, beyond control; and so whole provinces were subjected to the indiscriminate pillaging of soldiery that sought to claim a share in chivalry but whose manner of living was the antithesis of what chivalry stood for, the protection of the poor, the fatherless and the widow.

Knight’s Tale poses the pivotal question about war: Is there such a thing as civilized warfare, as war fought for a just cause in a controlled manner as a means of restoring order to society, or do all wars inevitably lead to acts of savagery and excess that make a mockery of policy?35 Ancient Thebes is the story of a sustained, sordid, brutal, and self-indulgent lust for power and pleasure eventuating in spectacular violence—Cadmus and the dragon-tooth warriors, Oedipus’s primal crimes against nature, Eteocles and Polynices’ impiety and fratricidal warfare, Creon’s desecration of his nephew’s corpse and subsequent murder of his niece Antigone. The idea of a moderate use of force to serve the common good is alien to the Theban legend. Statius considers the possibility of a good war by inserting the Athenian warlord Theseus into the myth of Thebes. Theseus brings peace to Thebes and, in Statius’s version of events, saves Antigone, but only after an unforgettable orgy of death has occurred. As discussed above, Chaucer returned to Statius’s brooding treatment of the Theban material in order to foreground it. He rereads the Teseida through the lens of the Thebaid, turning it from a conventional love story into a philosophical reflection on the nature of love, war, and governance—both earthly and cosmic. Indeed, it becomes a kind of theodicy, asking why humans must suffer so much and whether there is a benevolent order that transcends the individual ills of human experience, providing an origin for temporal governance. In this vein, Chaucer presents the stadium Theseus builds to hold the tournament as a theatrum mundi, a microcosmic space in which Theseus will try to civilize the unruly dispute between Palamon and Arcite, itself symbolic of the dynastic rivalry between Polynices and Eteocles. 36

Ominously, there is nothing to stop Theseus’s men from just such rapine, as he "dide with al the contree as hym leste" (line 1004).

For Chaucer, it seems it is not justice but fortune that decides the outcome of war. The eldest Argive widow reminds Theseus of the role of "Fortune" in war, and Chaucer returns to the idea of the uncertainty of military ventures in the temple of Mars murals, where an enthroned "Conquest" (line 2028) is depicted with the sharp sword of Damocles hanging over his head by the thinnest of threads. Perhaps Theseus learns this lesson, as he moves steadily away from militarism in Chaucer’s narrative, changing the rules of the tournament to prevent mortal combat and ending the strife with Thebes through the diplomacy of the parliament. Yet, even in the mock battle of the tournament, death cannot be prevented, despite his best efforts. Is Chaucer suggesting that the prospect of limited warfare for some greater purpose (in this case the eventual pacification of Thebes) is human folly?
