Conquering your fear of spiders

Lisa Shea takes the concepts of desensitization and of 'chunking down' a big problem into smaller and more manageable steps, and applies them to overcoming a fear of spiders. She first writes about what might have caused someone to develop this fear, such as childhood associations, and emphasizes the freedom we all have to take charge and conquer the fears that may be impacting life in a negative way.

Photographs are used to help the reader become accustomed to the sight of various multi-legged creatures, starting with a very pretty butterfly and then in subsequent chapters moving on to several species of spider. Lisa Shea uses a lighthearted style to encourage the reader to think of spiders as friendly beings who just want to get on with their brief but useful lives.

For anyone with a serious fear of spiders, I think that further work would be needed in order to overcome their phobia, but for someone with a non-phobic, everyday aversion to small things that scamper about on all those legs, reading this book is a positive first step in the fear conquering process.

A Must Read for Anyone Unsure about Spiders

I know Lisa and wanted to read one of her nonfiction books so I purchased a copy of Conquering your Fear of Spiders. While I didn't really think I would like it that much, after all I'm not a fan of spiders, I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed reading the whole book. The Introduction and each chapter begins with a relevant quote, and continues with the most interesting information I can imagine about the world of spiders.

The pictures are appropriate to the content and add to the comfortable vibe of the book. The author eases us into the topic reassuring us that spiders are not as scary as many of us believe. While I never will be a lover of the species, I have a much better opinion of them than I did before I read this book. It's an easy to read, informative look at a species that is often misunderstood. I highly recommend you check it out.

Spiders can be our friends

I found this book very fascinating. Although I am not afraid of most spiders, I think it would be a good first step to conquering your fear. The author takes the approach of desensitizing the reader to his/her fear by learning to appreciate all the good spiders do. Being a gardener, I know I am glad to have spiders helping me to keep the bugs away.

I have heard that psychologists help people to ease there fears by slowly approaching the fear in steps. One of the first steps is to be able to look at a picture of the object you are afraid of. The author takes this approach with I think much success.

I would recommend this book to those afraid of spiders. This would be a good first step to ease into conquering your fear.

Not what I had expected

Honestly, this novel might not even rate the three stars I have given it, but I was feeling generous.

This book reads a great deal like someone's home MechWarrior role-playing game. The main character starts out with nothing, and attempts to recruit his former neighbors and family members to his cause. The rejection leads him to Solaris VII, where he must fight to gain the materiel he needs for his personal vendetta. He is there but a few days before leaving for Outreach to find a contract for his new merc unit, and to recruit more personnel. Everything works out relatively neat and tidy. It just does not read like a good novel, with the convenience of events and the results.

Also, given the back cover text, I had expected more along the lines of a Solaris-set novel, but the story stays on that world for a comparatively short time. Much more time is spent on the world that the unit is contracted to defend. And the antagonism there again reads like something from a poorly-designed RPG campaign, with the local strife resulting in an action by that planet's leaders unlike any other in the Battletech universe. The story climaxes with combat against Clan invaders, with the occasional pointless death thrown in, I assume to highlight the random savagery of war, but seemingly tacked on as an afterthought.

I was really disappointed in this novel. Note, however, that the sequel is vastly superior and very much worth the read, while this one is sure to languish on my shelf without getting a second read.

Uhhh, wow... If you like GOOD books, then stay away.

Alright, how do I say this simply?

It seems as if this book was written by a 14 year old, unfortunately...
It seems the other might have had multiple personalities while writing. It has multiple errors and a child-like story. The characters alone, such as "rose" the main character, are very poorly developed, seeming at one moment to be very intellectual, and the next, a complete retard attacking a cop, because of a sarcastic comment. Not only that, but conversation dialog is extremely hard to follow, for the lack of mention of who's talking, so you are left to guess at which one is speaking at which time. And the descriptions? Oh well, constantly switches from 3rd person, to 1st person, back to 3rd person, and to mix it up, let's throw another character in 1st person in the same paragraph.

Just, i'm 1/4th through the book, and the only reason I'm even Considering finishing this child-like book, is for the information regarding the battletech timeline.

If you are looking to further your battletech knowledge, read it...
Otherwise looking for a good battletech adventure??
Go read the Jade Phoenix Trilogy...
That's a series, anyone can enjoy.

One of the better Battletech books, but the sequal is better

Despite what some other reviewers will tell you, this one ranks right up their with Stackpole. Good character development, and tying together different elements of a character. The desensitization of war caused on Solaris is covered well, sometimes a bit too obviously. The battle is interesting, and the story of Turkyyaid shows a 'soldier's eye' view. The battle against the Clans is a little too easy towards the end, and I regret not telling a little more about Comstar. Some parts of the good old Order must be more nonsecular than others for him to be able to leave that easily. This is well-written, and is necessary to enjoy D.R.T., but the second one is better. I only wish their was a third Black Thorn story.

Tons of useful information!! Gave me tons of confidence!

I've recommended this book to half a dozen friends who are at a transitional point in their careers. I recently became self-employed, partially thanks to this book, which I read 6 months ago. The best thing I got from this book was an arsenal of responses to reservations a client might have about hiring you and/or paying you a good rate. I feel armed to dodge many kinds of bullets and defend myself as an independent consultant. I do marketing and PR, so the self-promotion advice only reaffirmed what I already knew about establishing one's self as an expert. GREAT BOOK!! Read this first!

This book is not only a valuable tool for a consultant but also it is a useful book for everyone that involves in business. Tom Lambert is a wellknown consultant with great experience in business. Thus, his book is an excellent resource about everything related to consulting. It is absolutely comprehensive and practicable book, with many useful examples from his experience and inside its pages you can find the solution for everything that you meet as a consultant. Great book!

About the Author
Ari Rabl obtained his PhD in physics at the University of California, Berkeley and worked for many years as research scientist for energy technologies at Argonne, NREL and Princeton University. He moved to the École des Mines de Paris as Senior Scientist at the Centre Energétique et Procédés until his retirement in 2007, and now continues to work as a consultant. For the last 20 years, his work has focused on environmental impacts and costs of pollution. He is one of the principal participants of the ExternE Project series (External Costs of Energy) of the European Commission DG Research, for which he has co-ordinated several research projects.

Joseph V. Spadaro is Research Professor at the Basque Centre for Climate Change, Bilbao, Spain where he works on low carbon planning strategies, and climate change and health vulnerability. He is also Environmental Systems Engineer at Argonne National Labs, Decision and Information Sciences Division, USA, working on environmental impact assessment of energy technologies. He has been a member of the core team of principal investigators in the ExternE Project series (European Commission, DG Research) since the mid-1990s, and has acted as expert consultant for international organizations, national governments and private industry in projects related to impacts and costs of pollution.

Mike Holland is a freelance consultant based in the UK. He has worked on assessment of pollution effects on ecosystems and health since 1986, and he has performed a large number of cost-benefit analyses for national government and the European Commission, particularly in relation to measures to improve air quality. He is currently the chair of NEBEI (Network of Experts on Benefits and Economic Instruments) under the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution.
