"This textbook is designed to give undergraduate students an overview of the Hearing Sciences. It has been laid out in an easy to read order, dividing the topics into four major sections: acoustics, instrumentation, anatomy and physiology of both the auditory and vestibular systems and psychoacoustics. Included as an Appendix is an overview of basic mathematics, which I found myself referring to often whilst reading this book! Each chapter contains a brief introduction, a clinical correlate in which the topic of the chapter is tied into a clinical scenario or pathology, and a succinct summary.

[Section 1: Basic Acoustics and Instrumentation,] has 8 chapters, all of which are quite equation heavy, but everything is explained as if for an undergraduate student so it is easy to follow. Nothing was left untouched in this section and through the first few chapters the authors delved into basic physics, chemistry and maths, providing an excellent overview of the logarithmic scale, which is of course important for audiologists to know and understand....

[The] two chapters [in Section 2: Introduction to Speech Acoustics] contain some excellent diagrams which pinpoint specific tongue, lip and vocal tract placements for various speech sounds....

Chapter 17 delved into advanced cochlear anatomy and I found myself glued to the page (re)learning about gap junctions and how defects in their structure can lead to genetic hearing loss....

About the Author
Teri A. Hamill, Ph.D., is Professor of Audiology at Nova Southeastern University, where she teaches Au.D. students.

Lloyd L. Price, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Audiology, taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the hearing sciences at Florida State University. When he began teaching an undergraduate hearing science course in 1983, there were no texts suitable at that level. In order to cover the material he wished to cover, it was necessary to develop a text, which evolved over a fifteen-year period. Price has background in both clinical audiology and academia. He worked as a professor for thirty-one years after having worked clinically for the previous nine years. Price is now retired, living in Havana, Florida with his wife, Cindy.

Sumptiously illustrated, expensive paper and detailed.
However a little more on how to identify would be nice as would an idiot's guide to the commonest species. A beginner would find it a real slog trying to identify a single shell they had picked up with only this book as a guide.

Guidebook to Pecten Shells is a great compact book on the recent family Pectinidae, the living species, and is a great addition to any shell enthusiasts library.
This 157 page book contains 29 color plates that illustrate about 200+ species.
the book is quite small though and it surprised me when I received it, but it is a great book for the amateur as well as the professional.

Anyone interested in shells, especially the scallops, will love this book and find it useful.

Get at the heart of your spending - and start saving

This book made changes in my life that I was not expecting. I’m pretty self-aware to begin with, and knew that my relationship with money was not as healthy as it could be. I set out to read this book with the hopes that I would finally be able to start saving money without feeling like I was pinching pennies. I ended up constructing a financial life I’m actually excited about.

Newcomb is able to challenge conventional money strategies by reframing the way we approach it. For example, I’ve always thought of the budget as two column: income and expenses. But the Loaded budget helped me see myself and skills as assets. I realized I have a lot more opportunities to make money than my paycheck. By seeing myself as a resource, I am able to start taking control of how I earn money rather than feeling like my paycheck is something that I’ll earn if I’m lucky.

The chapter on money psychology is really interesting, and she asks insightful questions. Her thoughts on privilege are particularly astute and useful beyond the world of money. The section on psychological distance really resonated with me. As someone is generally impatient and focused on the moment, I found her research and advice on how to get past impulsiveness immediately useful.

Another thing I love is how Newcomb describes everything as a need. We don’t have needs and wants, she says: we have needs and strategies. While I’ve instinctively recognized this in my own budget already, she lays out a very good case about how the things we want actually meet a need. For example, the trip to the coffee shop may actually be satisfying a social need. The strategy may change – say, order something cheaper, or head to the park instead – but knowing why you’re doing something will help so much with sticking to the budget.

This book will challenge you to be honest about your beliefs and needs and promises that if you do, you’ll get on track to a healthy relationship with money. If you’re already familiar with self-growth, you’ll find Newcomb’s approach really helpful to getting your financial life together. Even if it’s something that you’ve never tried, I think you’ll find it’s a refreshing way to think about personal finance.

I LOVED this book! After teaching financial literacy in high school and in college for many years, I find Sarah's take on the psychology of money refreshing and very true to LIFE! It provides the missing piece in the relevancy of financial literacy. Herwriting flows neatly by introducing a new topic in the last sentence of the previous topic. LOADED is easy to read and understand, and her stories used to support her concepts are very relatable and help to maintain interest. With Sarah's permission, I used a scenario in my college class to help my students successfully understand the emotional value of money. I highly recommend this book to everyone trying to get a handle on money management.

Excellent book -- both practical and thoughtful

This is both a thoughtful and practical book. Dr Newcomb dives into why so many of us struggle to manage our money effectively and relate to the job market and our income in a healthy way. For good or for ill, money is all around us, and it's part of our how we survive and succeed -- but yet we avoid talking about it, and treat the product of our own labor in a twisted love-hate manner.

She dives into why that happens, and how we can take a calm step back to analyze our "personal economy" - our income, our expenses, and our goals. Then, to top it off, she gives practical tools (from concepts to fill-in-the-blank worksheets) on how to actually do this in your daily life - with a more sensible clear approach to budgeting, and a better way to manage our money overall. Well done!

I bought this book as a reference for my psychology class that I teach at a local college. If I could select the textbook for my class, I would select this book. The text is well written, and the pictures,charts, diagrams are very helpful especially compared to the text I am stuck using. This book is a nice supplement and resource.

Essential reading for lovers of Ancient Greek history

A sometimes prolix but totally engaging re-examination of the Iliad and the Odyssey, while bringing the stories into contemporary relevance. Brilliantly researched, laced with anecdotes, some of them brutally personal, Adam Nicolson convincingly argues for a reappraisal of the works' authorship and chronology. Thoroughly entertaining, the audio version is also highly recommended. Homer does matter.

What a talent Adam Nicolson has! It feels such a privilege to journey with him through this book, sharing his love of Homer and the insights he provides about Homer's work and its relevance to our own lives. A work of genius!
