About the Author
Marty Gervais is an award-winning journalist, photographer, poet, playwright, historian, editor and teacher. In 1998, he won the prestigious Toronto's Harbourfront Festival Prize for his contributions to Canadian letters and to emerging writers. In 1996, he was awarded the Milton Acorn People's Poetry Award for his book, Tearing Into A Summer Day. He has twice won the City of Windsor Mayor's Award for literature, and has been the recipient of nearly two dozen Ontario Newspaper Awards for journalism.

About the Author

Nalan Gökoðlu is the Dean of the Fisheries Faculty at Akdeniz University in Turkey. She has worked as a researcher on fish processing, preservation and quality issues for almost 25 years, and also teaches in these subjects.

Pinar Yerlýkaya is in the Fisheries Faculty at Akdeniz University, Turkey, where she works on fish processing and quality issues.

This was an older printing. Book was scuffed. Printing, paper, and binding seemed cheap.

It's got all the info you need for certification

A text with everything you need to know for PADI Open Water Certification. I bought it to use as a reference, having done the course online.
I preferred the video & audio learning to reading the book. However, the book is cheaper than the online course and probably a faster way to learn the material than watching videos.

About the Author
David W. Martin is professor and head of the Department of Psychology at North Carolina State University. Previously he was professor and department head at New Mexico State University. He has a bachelor's degree from Hanover College, where he majored in psychology and physics. He also has a master's degree and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he majored in engineering psychology. His teaching interests include experimental methods, introductory psychology, human performance, and attention. He has won teaching awards at both NC State and NMSU. Dr. Martin has published in a number of research journals in the areas of attention, decision making, and memory. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society, Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and Psychonomic Society. He has also served as president of the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association. In his leisure hours, Dr. Martin enjoys running, scuba diving, singing, and playing at the beach with his two young sons. For 12 years he raced dirt-track stockcars and was known as "Dangerous David, the Racing Professor".

This book is a great success-- written in humour and style, Mister Martin guides me to all stages of planning, doing and reporting psychology experiments. This is certainly a 'must read' for all novice experimenters. This work is also free of pretentious scientific jargon. Excellent.

Best Textbook I've Ever Read

Until I read this book, I didn't think it was possible to write a textbook without it being drier than the Sahara desert, let alone a research methods textbook. However, this book is well-informed, easy to understand, and surprisingly delightful to read. It is witty without being annoying, and it covers everything thoroughly while being clear and without being convoluted, as many textbooks can be. I actually read the book cover to cover, not because it was required for class (though it was), but because I enjoyed it. It's really expensive for a paperback textbook (but all textbooks are expensive); however, I decided it was worth it to keep my copy instead of selling it back to defray the cost. If you need to understand research methods, get this book!

Great read for learning about experiments

This book was originally purchased for an Experimental Psychology class. This book was also like a bible for me. The author uses a form of writing that makes an already difficult subject easier to understand with the drawings and diagrams that reiterate in a visual manner what is being said in a written manner. This author does something not many college textbook authors do: he writes so students understand the concepts and terms. Many textbook authors believe students don't need easy material in a book most especially if they are college students, but we are in fact still students and need to learn the material to understand and not to sound smart. This author does this and so much more; I would recommend this to anyone wanting to know about any type of experiment and the basics of them.

Stroke of death

It’s been nearly 18 months since the first Deathstroke volume came out and I was wondering why it’d taken DC so long to release the second. As soon as you pick it up, you realize why: DC have crammed in issues #9-20 plus the #0 issue into this second and final Deathstroke volume. They waited until the series had ended before bundling them all up into one massive book because they don’t want to string this out into another volume, they just wanted it over and done with – and I can see why!

The main “story” arc is Deathstroke fighting Lobo, a space biker with the standard range of unimaginative superpowers: strength, speed, healing factor, etc. He fights him here, he fights him there, he fights him everywhere - the end! Next up is: Some Guy! Once Deathstroke defeats Lobo, they run out of name characters for him to fight so it becomes arbitrary villain of the week from there on out. The villains, or targets really, aren’t so much characters as superpowers with a face: there’s a guy who can’t be killed in some Eastern European country, there’s a Japanese mafia dude with cybernetic implants which makes him ultra-tough, and so on.

The problem with this series is that it has no direction. Initially Rob Liefeld set up a father/son storyline that was explored somewhat in the first volume and in the second is ignored until the final two issues where it’s rushed to an unsatisfying and overblown conclusion. In the interim you just have Deathstroke fighting random dudes with the occasional half-hearted attempt at a storyline. There’s something about the Nth Metal armour Deathstroke wears, meaning of course a cameo from Mr Nth Metal himself, Hawkman (and if you know anything about New 52 Hawkman it’s that he’s the kiss of death for a series once he appears!) but that “story” fizzles out in no time and is promptly forgotten.

It doesn’t help that the title had a revolving door of writers and artists. After Liefeld completed his Lobo arc, he left DC quite bitterly (google Liefeld leaving DC for some interesting tweets from the Rob – he even went after DC golden child Scott Snyder! No one was safe!), then another writer stepped in and left, then Justin Jordan, writer of Luther Strode, stayed on for the remaining issues. I’d say Jordan’s writing is maybe the best this book has but it’s still of a remarkably poor standard and nothing like his work at Image. Plus Jordan ties his issues into his godawful Team 7 series so the book ends with a final calamitous crash straight into a brick wall.

I’d say you get value for money with this volume purely for the ton of comics included but it’s really a clear case of quantity over quality. Sure there’s a lot of pages but it’s basically the same boring nonsense repeated over and over until it’s done. It was nice to see some Liefeld art again purely for nostalgic and comedic value – the guy’s crazy but he’s the Rob, and kudos to him for not putting up with DC’s idiocy – but this whole book was a flatline for me. I couldn’t wait until it was over.

New 52 Deathstroke proves that while he’s a good supporting character and a decent villain for the likes of Batman, he’s far too limited and not interesting enough to sustain his own series.

Visualization Tools For Business Analytics

"Now You See It" is the latest book by author Stephen Few. The description says this book is a companion to "Show Me The Numbers," which is a favorite book of mine. "Show Me The Numbers" is about building charts and tables that will help you show others what you see in your data. "Now You See It" is about helping you to find new ways to display your data for your own analysis. Before you can show others your data you need to understand it yourself, and that's where this book fits in.

Creating charts is front and center as the focus of this book. "Show Me The Numbers" focused on charts and tables that could be built with simple tools such as Excel. Now You See It shows you the types of analysis you can do when you employee more advanced software such as Tableau and R. Some of the illustrations are really cool to look at and inspirational, even if I will never have the tools or time to prepare my own version of them.

"Now You See It" is broken up into 3 sections:

In Part 1 - Building Core Skills for Visual Analysis. Stephen Few covers the history of information visualization, the basics of analysis, and how we perceive data. There is some overlap with "Show Me The Numbers," but it's only one chapter, and not a deal breaker for me. I found the history of information visualization chapter interesting, and I imagine that in 50-100 years there are going to be new kinds of visualization methods available that we haven't even thought of yet.

In chapter 4, Analytical Interaction and Navigation, the author covers the role of good software in the data analysis process. He lists a few requirements that good software should have, and in many cases popular software such as Excel fall short. This is when you realize that learning another program like R could be useful. I almost feel like this chapter was written for software developers who are trying to create their own data analysis software, so if you're in that camp this is your book.

Part 2 - Honing Skills for Diverse Types of Visual Analysis, goes in depth with various types of charts that you can use to analyze your data. There is a chapter for each of the major types of visual analysis: Time Series, Ranking and Part-to-Whole, Deviation, Distribution, Correlation, and Multivariate.

Within each chapter Stephen Few shows you which types of patterns you should look for in your data and shows you what those patterns mean. He then shows you different ways of displaying the data, which can range from simple Excel charts to complex visualizations which could belong in a magazine. Finally he finishes each chapter with a list of best practices for analyzing the data, such as scaling chart intervals properly or using logarithmic scales to compare the percent change of data with different starting points (look at almost any stock market graph to see a logarithmic chart in action).

These chapters form nearly 50% of the book, and could be very useful reading to a student getting started with statistics, or anyone else who is not completely comfortable with numbers.

Part 3 - Further Thoughts and Hopes. The first chapter of the book opens with the history of information visualization, and the final chapters conclude with the author's thoughts on the future. As computing power gets stronger and the internet becomes more ubiquitous new innovations are in the works, and some of them are covered here.

Recommendation

I finished reading this book about a week ago, and at first I didn't think much of it. I already have a strong analytical background and didn't feel like I got much out of this book in terms of learning anything new. But after a few days I noticed that I starting thinking about problems differently - I started thinking about how I could present them in a visual manner, and I started sharing my simple charts with others.

I am finding that being able to throw together a chart quickly and effectively is extremely helpful for me and a great way to share results with coworkers. Despite having seen almost everything in this book before, reading it has got me thinking about using charts more to analyze data. It is also the kick I needed to start learning to do charts in SAS so I can expand my visualizations beyond what Excel can do.

The benefits of this book may not be immediately apparent like "Show Me The Numbers,", but if you give it some time to sink in I think you will start thinking of new ways to visualize your data. The charts shown by Few in this book are, for the most part, accessible to those of us in business, versus Edward Tufte who emphasizes charts created with design tools such as Adobe Illustrator. There are some examples shown in Tableau and Spotfire, which are both quite expensive. But there are also illustrations created in R, which is free. Of course if you are going to use those programs you have to learn to use them, but that will only increase your job appeal that much more.

If you work as a business analyst and are looking for practical ways to expand your knowledge and abilities, I highly recommend this book.

The one visualization book to have in the office

Stephen Few has put together a book that is useful as a reference but readable as well. I heard him speak at a conference and really think he has hit the mark. The book is accessible without being shallow. He gives worthwhile examples of how to combine the features of the software with good graphing techniques. As someone who has worked with many of the techniques, he provides a reason for what I did intuitively. This is invaluable for both displaying findings and training subject experts to analyze their data.

Great introduction to Visual Analysis

As someone who's done over two decades of research and development on visualization technology, I highly recommend "Now You See It" for everybody - novice to expert. Stephen Few explains visual analysis clearly and conversationally. His examples are accessible, appropriate, and beautiful.

The book is well-structured. Part I focuses on core concepts, principles, and practices. It prepares the general reader for Part II, which focuses on more technical material involving specific types of analysis (time-series, deviation, correlation, etc). Part II contains practical advice that will help everyone become better at visual analysis.

I particularly like the recommendations Stephen Few has included for visual analysis techniques that should be supported by commercial systems that are helping us work with data. After all, computers are now automatically collecting data. This book teaches us how to use this data to inform our individual work and to enhance our communication with each other. I believe these are key skills that will help us improve our modern, complex world.
