Younger: A Breakthrough Program to Reset Your Genes, Reverse Aging, and Turn Back the Clock 10 Years, by Sara Gottfried

The New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure and The Hormone Reset Diet shows every woman how to create a lifestyle that will help her look great, feel energized, and slow down the effects of aging.

Feel destined for cellulite, saddle bags, and belly fat? Does your family come from a long line of Alzheimer's, cancer, or heart disease? Will nothing help your aging skin or declining libido or flagging energy? This book is for you.

The body is magnificent but it doesn't come with a lifetime warranty, or an operating manual. You're the result of millions of years of evolution, but many of the adaptations that helped your ancestors survive are now working overtime to accelerate the aging process. The assumption here is that we are our genes and therefore trapped by the past. The good news is that your genetic code—the DNA sequence that is the biochemical basis of heredity—can play a minor role in the way you age.

The scientific reality is that 90 percent of the signs of aging and disease are caused by lifestyle choices, not your genes. In other words, you have the capability to overcome and transform your genetic history and tendencies. Harvard/MIT—trained physician Sara Gottfried, M.D. has created a revolutionary 7-week program that empowers us to make the critical choices necessary to not just look young, but also feel young.

Dr. Gottfried identifies and builds this book around the five-key factors that lead to accelerated aging -the muscle factor, the brain factor, the hormone factor, the gut factor, and the toxic fat factor. The 7-week program addresses these factors and treats them in an accessible and highly practical protocol and is as follows:

  • Feed—Week 1
  • Sleep—Week 2
  • Move—Week 3
  • Release—Week 4
  • Expose—Week 5
  • Soothe—Week 6
  • Think—Week 7

Younger increases not only your lifespan, but also your healthspan. Dr. Gottfried's program makes it possible to change the way you age, stay younger longer, and remain healthy and vibrant for all of your days.

Review
“Younger is the breakthrough book we’ve been waiting for on DNA, epigenetics, and aging. It is a stunning achievement by one of our wisest and most thoughtful women physicians. Don’t wait for a scary diagnosis - start the Younger protocol without delay.” (Mark Hyman MD, ten-time #1 New York Times bestselling author and Director, Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine)

“Gottfried speaks to the secret question of a generation: ‘Now that we have things figured out, how do we stay on the planet long enough to live what we finally know?’ Her guidance is an invaluable resource to those who feel we are spiritually youthing as we physically age.” (Marianne Williamson)

“Mind blown. Prepare to completely shift your paradigm around aging. Dr. Sara makes the latest science accessible to show you how to de-age your body and lengthen your health span. This book is a stunning, epic achievement.” (JJ Virgin, NYTimes bestselling author of The Virgin Diet)

From the Back Cover

The scientific reality is that 90 percent of the signs of aging and disease are caused by lifestyle choices, not genes.

Why then do so many of us still feel destined for cellulite, saddle bags, and belly fat? Why do we worry about the long line of Alzheimer’s, cancer, and heart disease in our families? Why do we tolerate sagging skin, flagging energy, and lowered libido as we grow older, writing them off as inevitable? We are not victims of our age. Our symptoms are both controllable and avoidable. There is a way to slow and even reverse the signs of aging, combat genetic illness, control and determine the expression of genes, and even improve health as we age.

The body is magnificent, but it doesn’t come with a lifetime warranty or an operating manual. You’re the result of millions of years of evolution, but many of the adaptations that helped your ancestors survive are now working overtime to accelerate the aging process. The assumption here is that we “are our genes” and therefore trapped by the past. Harvard/MIT—trained physician and New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Reset Diet Sara Gottfried, M.D., has created a revolutionary seven-week program that empowers us to make the critical choices necessary to not just look young, but also feel young and live longer.

There are five key factors that lead to accelerated aging—the muscle factor, the brain factor, the hormone factor, the gut factor, and the toxic fat factor. Dr. Gottfried’s seven-week program addresses these factors and delivers an accessible, practical plan to not only increase our life spans, but also our health spans, making it possible to change the way we age, stay younger longer, and remain healthy and energetic for all of our days.

Imagine going through life with clear labels on all the things that age us . . . and on the things that keep us young, energetic, and healthy. Now with Younger by Sara Gottfried, M.D., this possibility has become a reality.

Finally a book about Aging that is hopeful!
By terrifried
I have worked with Dr. Gottfried for years. Before her books. I can tell you hands down that she is one of the most intelligent, thoughtful, and articulate doctor-writers out there. I am so discerning about all the information out there in the world of fake news and charlatans especially in the health industry. Dr. Sara is the real deal. She is a perfect blend between traditional medicine and cutting edge practices. Now about YOUNGER: I just finished the book and couldn't put it down. I am a health book junkie, but this book is different. It has the science and research in it. Her MIT and Harvard educations are evident. And, that is what distinguishes Dr. Sara from the rest. I am a healthy skeptic but willing participant in all this new functional medical protocol. I've been very interested in exploring my DNA and genetic variants so I can better understand what actions I need to take to put the cards in my favor (epigenetics). YOUNGER is so full of very tangible actions I can take to override my wonky genetics. She is very generous with her research and resources. She spent a lot of time researching and it shows in the book. I also love her humor, humility, and vulnerability in this book. She reveals her own struggles which helped me feel like I'm not the only one who works so hard daily to just maintain my health in middle age and beyond!

Fascinating read - excellent protocols
By Nicole A.
Here is yet another masterpiece of research placed into practical protocols for everyday folks to use in their anti-aging quest. I have followed Dr. Sara from her first book, to this third work. While I noticed 2 negative reviews for this publication, and would not want to use a review forum for argument, I must say that the areas they brought up are bits of nutrition dogma (where many in the field of nutrition find controversy - as a dietitian I am very much aware of and involved in such controversial conversations). This book is much more than a book dealing with diet and recommending specific curative foods (as those two reviews would imply). The book is based on cutting-edge research looking into longevity, nutrigenomics, and how lifestyle medicine can affect our DNA, thus preventing disease and extending our healthspan. It's truly fascinating. When you read this book, you will be given tools for how to design your daily schedule, your plate (and the research is presented free of nutrition dogma), your physical activity routine, your social habits, and even exercises for your brain to keep you young and optimally vibrant and vital for the duration of your long and healthy life. This is a breath of fresh air within the anti-aging scene, which in many cases is inaccessible to the masses (and many times, unrealistic, surface-oriented, and even dangerous). The practices you will learn in Younger will make you feel great, in the present (as evidenced by how folks like myself experienced the pilot program of putting these areas into practice over the course of 8 weeks). You'll feel the difference quickly and you'll be able to see it. So not only will you have the long-term benefits of healthspan - you'll have short term benefits too. It's also just a great read - Dr. Sara knows how to make science fun, intriguing, and even sexy.

I think she's a brilliant Dr. and all her information is science based which is important to me. I think every woman I know she read this, along with her other book "the hormone cure". Why suffer needlessly through middle age when we have Dr. Sara to help us through...knowledge is power peeps!! Get on board and feel better today!!!

Demons no match for God
By A Customer
I have found the advice of John and Paula Sandford very helpfull in the past. So I was intrested in this colaboration with his son Mark. First I liked how they directed you to take resposibility for your actions, and made it clear that we can not use Demons as an excuse for our harmful acts, we provide the furtile ground. In the end it is God who leads us to God, but it is great to have people like John and Mark, dedicated to helping us when we get stuck along the way. If you are ready to take responsibility for your life, this is a great book to help you along.

Some Great Points, However...
By Lorenzo Elijah Heighway
I am about halfway through this book and the authors do make some excellent points. However I did want to comment on a couple of things I disagree with, where I feel that they stretch or misuse Scripture somewhat.

1. One of the four laws of inner-healing the Sandfords rely upon is stated by them on page 59 as follows:

"The fourth law is becoming what we judge in others: 'Therefore you are without excuse, every man of you who passes judgment, for in that you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things' (Romans 2:1). I have found it to be a law that whoever judges another dooms himself to do the same thing, or something stemming from the same root"

I believe this is a real misinterpretation of this verse. The verse is actually saying that when we judge others for doing the things that we ourselves ARE DOING (my emphasis - on the PRESENT TENSE) we are condemning ourselves. In other words, God will simply use the same standard for us as we use for others, because we are doing the very same things that we judge.

There is no PREDICTIVE sense in this verse. It is NOT saying that when we judge others for doing certain things, in the future we WILL do the same or similar.

2. Commanding Demons to Name Themselves
From p42ff, the Sandfords state that we should not command demons to name themselves in the process of deliverance. There then follows a very convoluted explanation of the story of the Gadarene Demoniac in Matthew 8:28-34 and Mark 5:1-17. Myself and every other deliverance minister I have come across, including seasoned ministers such as Charles Kraft, Francis MacNutt, Derek Prince and Don Dickerman maintain that in these passages Jesus was clearly interrogating the demons, and that this is a helpful example that can be followed. It is not essential to know the names of evil spirits in order to cast them out, but it can often reveal things about for example the function they are performing in the host person.

The Sandfords try to make out that Jesus was asking the man his name, in order to ascertain what level of deliverance had already been attained - like a "reality check". They try to make out that Jesus already knew the name of all the demons and therefore did not need to ask. if we follow that logic, Jesus would also have known what level of deliverance had already been attained!

Also, Jesus was operating as an anointed man while He walked upon the earth. His identity was always God, but He laid aside attributes such as omniscience and relied upon His intimate communion with the Father, and the leading of the Holy Spirit, as our example. Therefore He did not automatically know the name of all the demons occupying the man.

Having raised these reservations, it has not put me off continuing to read the rest of the book and find some great wisdom within it.

So spiritual and so thurough
By S. Busch
This book blew me away. It is so detailed into how deliverance and inner healing work. John, Paula, and Mark Sanford are by far the most informed and spiritual experts in spiritual warfare and bringing healing to the hurt. They present the information with supporting evidence from scripture. In certain situations, such as haunted houses, that are not mentioned in the Bible, he clearly states what is his own opinion. I love the way John and Mark Sanford are not afraid to admit that there is a difference between a spiritual problem and a physical problem. This book is recommended only for those who have a strong spiritual understanding.

In this rich and illuminating book, the Pulitzer Prize-winning, bestselling author Robert Coles creates a portrait of moral leadership--what it is, and how it is achieved--through stories of people who have led and inspired him: Robert Kennedy, Dorothy Day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Erik Erikson, a Boston bus driver, teachers in college, medical school, and elementary school, among others.

Coles tells how to be a moral leader and shows how the intervention of one person can change the course of history, as well as influence the day-to-day quality of life in our homes, schools, communities, and nation. We need to "hand one another along" in life, says Coles, quoting his friend Walker Percy, and in Lives of Moral Leadership he explores how each of us can be engaged in a continual and mutual life-giving process of personal and national leadership development. Coles discusses how the actions of the American president affect the way people feel about themselves and the country, and-citing the influence of Shakespeare's Henry V on Robert Kennedy, and of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina on his own mother--explains how reading literature can motivate action and growth. The way in which moral leaders emerge today, and for all time, comes vividly to light in this brilliant book by one of America's finest teachers and writers.

Amazon.com Review
Here is another book that has its origin in the impeachment of President Clinton. Yet Robert Coles, a noted psychiatrist, bestselling author (The Moral Intelligence of Children), and Pulitzer Prize winner (Children of Crisis), does not deliver a polemicized account of those days. Instead, he tries to describe moral exemplars--something he thinks his country desperately requires: We need heroes, people who can inspire us, help shape us morally, spur us on to purposeful action--and from time to time we are called on to be those heroes, leaders for others, either in a small, day-to-day way, or on the world's larger stage. At this time in America, and in the rest of the world, we seem to need moral leadership especially, but the need for moral inspiration is ever present. Coles writes about Robert F. Kennedy (whom he knew personally), Shakespeare's Henry V (who had an influence on RFK, reports Coles), the literature of Conrad and Tolstoy, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Dorothy Day--even Al Jones, a black bus driver in Boston during that city's school desegregation controversy. The book's bottom-line message is an encouraging one: moral leaders are important, and they may be present in places where we don't normally go looking for them. "Moral leadership as we study it in history and politics (from the distance of time and events we never get to see or learn about in any detail) is also moral leadership that can happen right in front of us or not far away," notes Coles, quoting the psychoanalyst Erik Erikson. We look up to political leaders all the time--or at least try to, or think we should. "But we also constantly look to one another, to uphold for one another various suppositions and ideals, to hand one another along, morally as well as psychologically," writes Coles (this time in his own words, with allusion to Walker Percy). In the end, Lives of Moral Leadership is a plea that all of us can become moral leaders--and many of us must. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly
In a collection that ranges from vague to incisive, Coles (Children of Crisis; The Moral Intelligence of Children; etc.) presents true stories and reflections about moral leaders and what distinguishes them as such. Drawing heavily on recorded interviews, the Pulitzer Prize-winning psychiatrist and Harvard ethics professor profiles moral leaders he has known. Uniting all of his subjects is "moral courage"Atheir ability to know who they are and what they believe in, and to take action they believe is right and necessary to instruct and influence others (Coles quotes Erik Erikson, who said, "There's leadership in action"). Some are famous for their moral heroismARobert Kennedy, Dorothy Day and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Others are not well known, such as Albert Jones, a janitor who volunteered to drive a bus taking African-American children to previously all-white Boston schools. Coles also examines the moral content of writers, including William Shakespeare and Joseph Conrad, and illustrates how his teacher, Perry Miller, helped him "make connections" between books and life. Finally, he examines how indiscretions or bad decisions by people deemed moral leaders, like President Clinton, affect their ability to lead or for others to continue to view them as leaders. The book is marred by woolly writing and overanalysis of minutiae (e.g., the phrase "hit home" is dissected to mean "take up residence in the contemplative sector of our thinking life"), and Coles never fully explains how moral leadership differs from leadership plain and simple. But he excels at oral history, at getting people of action to reflect for the record, and he successfully honors his subjects (most of whom are left of center, a counterbalance to the recent right-wing dominance of the public discussion of morality) and offers the reader much to reflect on. Moral Leaders Beget Moral Leaders, and Beget a Moral World
By Donald Mitchell
The book clearly deserves more than 5 stars.
Dr. Coles is helping us see "circles of human moral connectedness growing, touching, informing the lives of individuals and of the communities to which we belong."
This is the most insightful book on moral leadership that I have read. That success builds on giving you an inside-out examination of how moral leaders developed their perspectives, how their words and deeds affected others, and how moral progress ensued. Professor Coles was able to do this by heavily drawing on people and situations he knew personally, so that you get many lovely nuances of how moral leadership has worked in his life through civil rights and humanitarian examples.
The book opens with a lengthy anecdote about how Robert Kennedy (when he was a Senator) worked with a group of Doctors, including the author, to develop the food stamp program. The physicians would have been satisfied with venting their moral outrage at hunger in America and going home. Kennedy helped them understand that they could accomplish much more by matching their indignation to the practical matters of influencing others. The author often thought that Kennedy was not being sincere as these lessons were being given, but later came to realize that Kennedy had given them all and the nation a great gift of moral leadership.
Unlike most books about leadership, this one talks about ordinary people as well. Those examples speak louder to us, if you are like me, because they describe situations where we are likely to find ourselves, and can draw practical inspiration. I was especially interested in how the Tomasellos encouraged Mr. Thomas (a black man) to go after the vote in the South, Elaine Vogel's efforts to develop her white students' moral sensibilities during the school integration years in New Orleans, and Al Jones' example in encouraging busing in Boston (both by speech, becoming a bus driver, and using the bus rides to provide moral lessons for the embattled black students).
Many anecdotal books seem to have no point, but Dr. Coles has created one here that gives you the rich detail necessary to make the points for yourself. The lessons you learn from your self-examination will stay with you more than if he continually made all of the points for you. This is a greater gift of moral leadership than a traditional book attempts.
Clearly, moral leadership has many roots, and each is examined in detail through the cases here. The most important ones seem to be in literature (such as Conrad's heroes), the examples of great moral leaders (such as Gandhi), and the supportive reactions we get to efforts at moral leadership (as when someone tells us we should go ahead). We can each stimulate much more moral leadership by reading literature about moral leadership, sharing what we learn with others and encouraging them to read the same literature, reading about the lives of moral leaders and sharing those lessons and encouraging similar reading, encouraging the moral observations and actions of others, and by being a good example in taking moral stands and actions. I came away with a sense that the amount of moral leadership could be greatly expanded if each person simply absorbed and acted on the major lessons of this book.
If you are moved by this book, I suggest that you develop your moral consciousness by looking for places every day where you can share what you learned with younger people. In that way, you can have the most influence for the longest time, and help create a magnificent legacy for your own life.
Create more goodness!

Great Book. Tiresome Sentences
By Jim Street
I agree with the Washington Post Book World assessment that Robert Coles should be declared a "national treasure." For years his writing have shown him to be a man of compassion with a heart for the oppressed and downtrodden as well as for the children who are often so easily overlooked in our society.
Coles new book "Lives of Moral Leadership" is also a national treasure. I think it is important not only for the insights it provides concerning moral leadership but also because of its behind the scenes glimpse of historic events that shaped the American character in the latter part of the 20th century.
In the book, Coles displays the tensions inherent in moral leadership including the tensions of inherent moral force and political pragmatism, the leader as hero and also as one who must garner the consent of his/her followers, wisdom and innocence, and "standing apart" in order to give courage to others.
The book is a collection of narratives and reflections. Much of the material is drawn from Coles interviews with such people as Robert Kennedy, Dorothy Day, and Danilo Dolci. The reader is asked to do a good bit of reflecting based upon the stories Coles tells.
My only complaint about the book has to do with Coles style of writing. While his style is clear in most instances, he has a tendency to launch into never ending sentences. Me thinks he sometimes feels "he will be heard for his much speaking." Every so often you will want to say, "Robert, a period costs no more than a semi-colon, dash, colon and parentheses."
The chapter on Dorothy Day is worth the price of the book and is a wonderful of example of someone who tried to stay faithful to the leading of God as well as to the wisdom of community.
Great book. Tiresome sentences at times.

A book that every ... member would find silly...
By Daniel
I enjoyed a lot the reading of that book. Dr. Coles is a man who really dedicated himself for the well being of children and society in general. His examples are powerful and instructive. But reviews like the one of John S. Bradburn inspires me pitty. I looked at Mr. Bradburn's interest, and found out that Charlton Heston seems to be his favorite "philosopher", and war his theme of predilection. Fortunately, USA has citizens like Robert Coles and the individuals he described in his book, and it is because such people that Leonard Cohen is right when he sings that "Democracy is coming to the USA"...

Vibrations and Waves in Continuous Mechanical Systems, by Peter Hagedorn, Anirvan DasGupta

The subject of vibrations is of fundamental importance in engineering and technology. Discrete modelling is sufficient to understand the dynamics of many vibrating systems; however a large number of vibration phenomena are far more easily understood when modelled as continuous systems. The theory of vibrations in continuous systems is crucial to the understanding of engineering problems in areas as diverse as automotive brakes, overhead transmission lines, liquid filled tanks, ultrasonic testing or room acoustics.

Starting from an elementary level, Vibrations and Waves in Continuous Mechanical Systems helps develop a comprehensive understanding of the theory of these systems and the tools with which to analyse them, before progressing to more advanced topics.

  • Presents dynamics and analysis techniques for a wide range of continuous systems including strings, bars, beams, membranes, plates, fluids and elastic bodies in one, two and three dimensions.
  • Covers special topics such as the interaction of discrete and continuous systems, vibrations in translating media, and sound emission from vibrating surfaces, among others.
  • Develops the reader’s understanding by progressing from very simple results to more complex analysis without skipping the key steps in the derivations.
  • Offers a number of new topics and exercises that form essential steppingstones to the present level of research in the field.
  • Includes exercises at the end of the chapters based on both the academic and practical experience of the authors.

Vibrations and Waves in Continuous Mechanical Systems provides a first course on the vibrations of continuous systems that will be suitable for students of continuous system dynamics, at senior undergraduate and graduate levels, in mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering. It will also appeal to researchers developing theory and analysis within the field.

Crystal Structures and Cation Sites in the Rock-Forming Minerals, by Joseph R. Smyth, David L. Bish

Intended to become the standard reference work on rock-forming mineral structures, this book is the end-product of a five-year project. The authors have recalculated, compiled and presented mineral structure and cation site data in a form that will be useful to a broad range of geophysical scientists seeking a deeper understanding of physical properties and element distributions in natural systems. Cation radius relative to site size, and cation charge relative to site electrostatic potential, are the two dominant factors that control distributions of major, minor, and trace lithophile elements among mineral phases and sites within minerals. Cation radii and charges have been available for some time, but not until now has there been a systematic compilation of structural data, particularly mean cation-anion distances and electrostatic energies. This volume covers the principal rock-forming silicates, oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, sulphates, phosphates, and halides. For each structure, cell parameters, cell volume, molar volume, density, formula, and formula weight are presented. For each cation site, positional parameters, site symmetry, Wyckoff notation, nearest-neighbour distances, mean distances, standard deviation of distance, variance of central bond angle, quadratic elongation, and electrostatic energy are presented. All data, except for cell parameters and atom positions, are original calculations unique to this volume. Original polyhedral drawings of most of the structure types are also included. Mineralogists, petrologists, geochemists and geophysicists will find this unique book very useful. It may also serve as an advanced text for students in these fields.

Play Anything: The Pleasure of Limits, the Uses of Boredom, and the Secret of Games, by Ian Bogost

How filling life with play-whether soccer or lawn mowing, counting sheep or tossing Angry Birds-forges a new path for creativity and joy in our impatient age
Life is boring: filled with meetings and traffic, errands and emails. Nothing we'd ever call fun. But what if we've gotten fun wrong? In Play Anything, visionary game designer and philosopher Ian Bogost shows how we can overcome our daily anxiety; transforming the boring, ordinary world around us into one of endless, playful possibilities.

The key to this playful mindset lies in discovering the secret truth of fun and games. Play Anything, reveals that games appeal to us not because they are fun, but because they set limitations. Soccer wouldn't be soccer if it wasn't composed of two teams of eleven players using only their feet, heads, and torsos to get a ball into a goal; Tetris wouldn't be Tetris without falling pieces in characteristic shapes. Such rules seem needless, arbitrary, and difficult. Yet it is the limitations that make games enjoyable, just like it's the hard things in life that give it meaning.

Play is what happens when we accept these limitations, narrow our focus, and, consequently, have fun. Which is also how to live a good life. Manipulating a soccer ball into a goal is no different than treating ordinary circumstances- like grocery shopping, lawn mowing, and making PowerPoints-as sources for meaning and joy. We can "play anything" by filling our days with attention and discipline, devotion and love for the world as it really is, beyond our desires and fears.

Ranging from Internet culture to moral philosophy, ancient poetry to modern consumerism, Bogost shows us how today's chaotic world can only be tamed-and enjoyed-when we first impose boundaries on ourselves.

Review
"Proposing an aesthetic of play, [Bogost] draws on myriad examples, from golf to the task of watering his lawn to his daughter's self-directed rules of 'step on a crack, break your mother's back.' ...[the] idea-driven prose of PLAY ANYTHING might remind you of the applied-philosophy tactics of an Alain de Botton... demonstrate[s] the importance of thoughtful, serious criticism on gaming and play." -New York Times Book Review
"Of all the books on this list, this may be the hardest to describe, and in my assessment that was an asset. The year saw a few new entries in the 'Tackle life's challenges like a game' category, a thesis that's gaining momentum, but this book goes deeper than most via an enlightening discussion of the role of limits in both games and life. Bogost strikes me as equal parts philosopher and savant game enthusiast-a systems thinker with a penchant for high score formulas-and I'm glad he wrote Play Anything because it's causing me to look at problems in a different way. Read it and I think you'll see why."-Dan DiSalvo, Forbes.com, Best Brain Books of 2016

"An erudite and often amusing book." -Wall Street Journal
"Play Anything isn't really just an argument for turning dull tasks into games. It's a manifesto for a different attitude to the world." -Guardian (UK)
"I can tell you that a great way to have fun with the job of writing a book review-to play while writing it-is by pursuing it earnestly and seriously as a book review. A humble, highly constrained genre. You tell people about the book. You tell them whether you think it's worth reading. (Yes.) And then, instead of allowing your ego to ruin everything by trying to make it cool, you move on in search of the next playground." -Slate

"Part personal meditation, part guide to living a happier life, Play Anything is a Walden for the 2010s." -New Scientist
"Play Anything is a one-stop workshop for how to play in the 21st century... a manifesto, and it declares that more recess is good for the soul. Maybe pick this one up in your off-time." -San Francisco Book Review

"Empowering, fresh, and engaged." -Kill Screen
"For anyone who cares or works with or thinks about things like fun, enjoyment, happiness, play, and games, Play Anything is a conceptual thrill ride. Poetic. Deeply philosophical. Refreshingly insightful. It will challenge almost everything that you think you know about play, and then lift you towards a new and remarkably freeing perspective on everything else." -Deep Fun

"An essential read for those seeking to understand how a new idea of play can be positive for our lives." -Library Journal, starred review
"[Bogost's] arguments are thoughtful and useful for approaching ordinary experiences. A delightful book that promotes playfulness with a purpose." -Kirkus Reviews
"It's difficult to imagine a book that takes on David Foster Wallace, Barry Schwartz, Mary Poppins, and a host of philosophers under one premise. Yet Bogost, professor of interactive computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology and founding partner at a video games company, has done so." -Publishers Weekly

"Play Anything is nothing short of brilliant. It proves that philosophy can fun, that fun can be profound, and that play is in fact the bridge that connects what is most meaningful and what is most pleasurable in our daily lives. I will be recommending this provocative and entertaining book to everyone I know." -Jane McGonigal, bestselling author of Reality is Broken and SuperBetter
"This is one of those books that blossoms: now tacking through intellectual history, now seizing on philosophical argument, now touched by memoir. At its hybrid heart, you'll find the meaning of 'play,' as well as 'fun,' and maybe even 'life.' Maybe you pick it up because, like me, you're a fan of Ian Bogost's essays, or maybe because you've enjoyed one of his previous books. No matter how you approach it, Play Anything will surprise you. You'll realize: this is a book with big ambitions, carrying a theory of the world that is covertly radical and, by the end, nothing short of thrilling." -Robin Sloan, bestselling author of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore

"A landmark. Play Anything is a humane and personal theory of play for the supermodern age. Full of fascinating insight and fresh perspective, Play Anything shows how play serves as a fundamental tool for examining the world around us. Through play we limit, focus, constrain and experiment into order to bring certain aspects of our world to the fore while allowing others to recede. As the basis both for creativity and for well-being, as well as the antidote to detached irony, play is how we all recognize our Davids, big and small, from the infinite blocks of marble all around us." -Stewart Butterfield, CEO of Slack Technologies
"Play Anything is a profound book: both a striking assessment of our current cultural landscape, and at the same time a smart self-improvement guide, teaching us the virtues of a life lived playfully." -Steven Johnson, bestselling author of How We Got to Now and Everything Bad is Good for You

The World as Artwork
By Frank Lantz
Here’s a game I like to play. Next time you are in an art gallery, turn away from the paintings and look at the people. Look at them as if that was the show. Look at the other visitors in the gallery exactly the same way you would look at the art, as if they had been put there to be seen, admired, analyzed, and understood. This game is harder than it looks. We don’t realize how many different ways of looking there are, and how different they are. But if you are able to successfully play this game you will learn some things. First, you will learn how ruthlessly we look at art, how rapacious and haughty and impatient and demanding we are. What is this? Where did it come from? What’s going on here? What does it mean? Do I like it? Is it worth my time? Turning our art gaze on our fellow humans is shocking, embarrassing, you will instantly want to recoil back to the polite and diplomatic gaze we use for each other. Don’t. Because if you persist in this rude game you will learn something else. Humans are amazing. Judged as artworks, random people are deeply, desperately, heartbreakingly beautiful. They are strange, surprising, fascinating. They are overloaded with complex patterns, the primal pleasures of platonic geometry mixed with the playful, self-referential curves of postmodern signifier-tricks. Looked at as artworks, humans are bottomless pools of hypnotic meaning – masterpieces of light and shadow, color and shape, symbol, signal and noise.

You can do the same thing just walking down the street, or in a coffee shop, or a business meeting, or standing in line at a bank. It doesn’t have to be people. It can just be a random street corner with its ordinary surfaces, and all the banal details of the regular world. If you can trick yourself into looking at things as if, as if they were someone’s work, as if they had been arranged with a purpose, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the world’s haunting beauty – the subtle echoes of shape and pattern, the way the light hits the bricks at just the right angle, the suspenseful mystery of an errant shadow, the perfect punchline of an upended cup.

This is the trick that Ian Bogost plays on himself, and us, in Play Anything. And according to this book it’s the trick that games are playing on us all.

This is a strange book, at first glance it looks a bit like self-help, pop psychology, or life advice, but it’s far weirder and more interesting than that. One of the early voices and key figures in the history of game studies, Bogost’s entire career has involved trying to figure out the tricky relationship between games and the world, starting with the primary question – what would it mean to take games seriously? How should we approach games as a topic for serious cultural criticism? For a long time, Bogost’s answer to that question involved thinking through the many ways games can be about the world. As a critic, and as a designer, he has emphasized how games, like other forms of media, can reflect the world – expressing ideas, operating rhetorically, conveying arguments through dynamic models and interactive systems. He has celebrated their power to communicate and persuade and cautioned against their enthusiastic adoption by the snake oil salesmen who would apply them as a magic elixir for shaping behavior.

This book marks something of a radical break with these concerns. In Play Anything games are treated less as things that work on or through or about or against the world and more as aspects of the world itself, invitations to experience the world as it is, not as we imagine, not for our sake, not in our interest, but on its own terms – blunt, indifferent, but also endlessly fascinating and sublime. The way a ball bounces, the way tetronimoes fit together, the way code functions. This new perspective is not a reversal of Bogost’s earlier concerns but it feels like the results of a dedicated effort to get beneath them, to discover something foundational about the underlying nature of play and games. His success in this effort suggests that this book belongs beside Huizinga’s Homo Ludens, Suit’s The Grasshopper, and Sutton-Smith’s The Ambiguity of Play as a key work in the field. It is probably Bogost’s best book to date, and that’s saying something.

It is also (and probably not unrelatedly) his most personal book. The threads that tie the book together are drawn from his life, his work, his family, his habits and hobbies. Bogost is a writer known for calculated erudition and acerbic wit and this book has both, but it has more. It is weird and warm; human, worldly. It is as if, contemplating the central thesis that games provide an opportunity to confront the stubborn truth of the world, he decided to let the lived reality of his own life guide his thinking. Rather than grand theory-spinning we get close observation of games and life as they actually are. Not idealized, not demonized, not disappointing, or frustrating, or thrilling, or boring or amazing or fantastic. Not life-changing, just life. But look at life, look at the ways it moves and doesn’t move. The world, with its limited degrees of freedom, unfolds into intricate arabesques more marvelous than any grand theory could contain. This is the secret of games as Bogost has come to understand them.

In addition to being deeply personal, Play Anything is also deeply philosophical. For those of us who have followed Bogost’s forays into Object Oriented Ontology without every quite understanding how they relate to his work on games, this book closes the loop, providing an intuitive and satisfying connection. The way that games draw us in to trace the convoluted surfaces of objects and rules and materials and code and the brute facts of their behaviors and interactions provides a model for a way of looking at the world beyond the demands of our egos and the distortions of our desires. (The apparent contradiction that OOO itself is an intensely human project, fully subordinate to our egos and desires, it just another one of those facts about the world that we can play with and admire.)

It has long been a habit of many ambitious game creators and critics to expound on the glorious potential of games while disparaging their current status. This book suggests a different way of thinking about games’ potential. It is not up to games to evolve into a more beautiful form, one more pleasing to us, more full of meaning. It is up to us to rise to the challenge they present – the challenge to inhabit the world’s corners, to see how they work and how we work inside them. The beauty of games is the play of close attention, and it’s all around us, waiting for us to look.

It could be a book.... well, this book is for you regardless of who you are.
By Nick LaLone
Play Anything is a book that is hard to describe.

It could be a book for those looking to understand how to escape their misery.
It could be a book for game designers looking to connect more intimately with culture in their designs.
It could be a book for academics who want to understand how play is intimately connected to culture itself.
It could be a book for a parent who wants to understand their children better.
It could be a book for those who just cannot fathom millenials.
It could be a book for millenials who want to understand themselves.
It could be a book for David Foster Wallace fans.

It could be any of those things and more...or less.

Play anything is a book that manages to cross disciplinary lines, publics, fandoms, and all along the way, offer a simple, unintuitive position on the function of play as a function and creator of culture itself. I say unintuitive because much of the book is going to be counter to the lived experience. It must be counter, it must be unintuitive because intuitively, the tedium and boorish nature of everything we do is constantly defined as those things we shouldn't do. For us, those of us living those lives, the constraints of our everyday life (supermarket lines, getting gas, cooking food) are those things we cannot fathom. They are simply acts performed and tolerated throughout the day so we can do something "fun."

Yet, much like a fish who cannot comprehend water, it is those constraints that offer us a way to experience, to play with.

It is something fascinating to think about. If you are an academic who researchers games, I believe this book might be one of the more important pieces to hit game studies in quite some time. For me, I have long been frustrated that the concept of "magic circle" has been dissected from the definition of play. I have been frustrated that play's significance for culture has been mostly ignored. Game studies isn't about games, but about culture itself.

Do yourself a favor and head into this book as quickly as possible.

Great idea-sharing potential, very poor delivery
By Shawn Pierce
For the first time in a long time I started a book without finishing it.

The idea of starting a book without finishing it does not frazzle me as I would prefer not to be a slave to be a book that is leading me nowhere. However, I do consider myself able to bring out key details and ideas despite annoyances with a book or writing style.

I struggled with Bogost's writing style. He proclaimed his wonderful ideas (and they were really great ideas - no sarcasm) but in a way that was repetitive and boring. There were many insights that came up and interested me, but so much of it was weighed down by the cloudy presentation he gave in his book.

Also, despite his repetitive style, I continually found myself having to go back to the beginning of the chapter's to identify the definitions he gave to his key terms: boredom, fun, and games. I loved his definitions and they fit into a holistic worldview (one that I encourage) but they were muddled with so much extra verbiage that I couldn't see the forest for the trees or vice versa.

Overall, this is a book that has great idea-sharing potential. But it just doesn't deliver those ideas through a great medium.

For a more cogent presentation of Bogost's ideas, I would recommend checking out an interview between Bogost and Brett McKay of the Art of Manliness podcast.
