A poignant, revealing story of our time about self indulgence, wrongful dependency and the courageous race to save one's soul. Ms. Portanova gave me a glimpse into the world of an heiress who takes her privileged life to the brink of extinction, only to emerge to race the butterfly and find self love. As I look into my own mirror I can see that I am racing butterflies too...

Its a troubled account from someone who's gone further into several circles of Dante's hell than even the stoutest adventurer would care to go. As a narrative of successes, failures and missions we aren't talking Hemingway, but it doesn't aspire to literary greatness and we shouldn't expect that...read rather a narrative with the willingness to discover and place honesty and self awareness at a foundation of one's life. To find and pursue what's truly important to them above all else. What triumphs here is not the account itself but the fact that Kate had the courage to write it and to publish it. Most of us avoid confronting our lives and its tribulations, and Kate's work may be a difficult mirror to look into. Kate succeeds profoundly where we fail...her account is a journey of introspection, and an inspiration to honest self appraisal and understanding, and the willingness to find and be one's self in the face of any odds to the contrary.

Bought the Kindle version - rating is based on that version

I made the mistake of buying the kindle version of this book and found it way too clunky to read either on my computer or my kindle. I think for these sorts of books, a physical copy is much better - even though the search functionality is better in an e-book format. It does look to be very comprehensive, and if I could exchange it for a hard copy, I would.

Not your parents' money management book

First, here's what this book is not: It's not your parents' money management and investing book, although as a parent I wish I had done in my twenties what Ramit Sethi tells the twenty-somethings they should be doing right now.

Ramit starts with the premise that most people are so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of financial information available that they just shut down and do nothing. So Ramit tells you exactly what to do with your money and why. Want to know whether it's smarter to pay extra on your student loans or put that money into your 401(k) instead? Ramit will tell you. Want to know some specific financial companies that offer the low-cost index funds you should invest in through your Roth IRA? Ramit will tell you. Do you not even know what the heck an index fund is? Ramit will tell you!

Ramit also tells the truth about brown bagging your lunch and curbing your latte habit; and the truth is that these actions on their own are virtually pointless. Instead, you should go after the big wins, like getting the lowest interest rate and the best price on your next car because you have impeccable credit and negotiated "like an Indian" (negotiation scripts included).

Ramit maps out exactly how to get from where you are now to where you want to be financially, including how to create a personal money management system that practically manages itself. Ramit's system starts with a no-fee checking account and an online high-interest savings account. (He even tells you which online bank he uses.) He then walks you through setting up automatic bill payments and regularly scheduled transfers to your investment accounts. Throughout, he includes easy-to-understand charts, as well as short pieces by other personal finance bloggers.

I wish I could quote some of the passages that I found especially useful or entertaining--Ramit writes with an appealing, if oddball, humor--but I have already mailed my copy of the book to my 24-year-old son, who called me last night to tell me it never would've occurred to him to ask his bank to waive an overdraft fee. (That gem is in chapter 2, I think.)

I Will Teach You To Save Money, though a far less titillating title would be the more appropriate name for this book. 20 and 30 somethings are the intended audience for this book. And for them the book is delightfully irreverent and saucy in its language. You will not get rich by using the concepts in this book however you will gain basic financial literacy, which is the first step on the path to creating wealth. There are no new financial revelations in this book. If you already have a personal finance library you can pass on this book. If you don't already have one and are looking for a place to start, this book is a great way to go. I Will Teach You To Be Rich is not for people who have created a measure of wealth and are looking to increase it. For that you will have to look elsewhere.

This is my new #1 recommendation for anyone seeking personal finance advice.

This is definitely the best personal finance book I've read so far. It's a logical, step-by-step, practical handbook for financial success, specially written for people in their 20's. Sethi gives advice on “automatically enabling yourself to save, invest, and spend - enjoying it, not feeling guilty...because you’re spending only what you have.” His main point: automate your finances so you effortlessly save and invest, leaving you money to spend on things you love without feeling guilty. Automatic saving and investing helps overcome psychological barriers and laziness.

In addition to his emphasis on automation, I agreed with Sethi’s recommendation for long-term, passive, buy-and-hold investing instead of speculative, market-timing investing. I also liked Sethi’s 85 Percent Solution, which states that it's better to act and get it 85% right than to do 0%; sometimes good enough is good enough, and it’s always better than doing nothing.

Another good message is "spend extravagantly on the things you love, and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't." That's valuable because everyone defines being "rich" differently, and it's not all about money. Money is just the tool we use to acquire the material possessions and experiences we want. That's the difference between being cheap and being frugal; being cheap is trying to cut spending on everything, and being frugal is cutting costs on the things you don't care about so that you can splurge on the things you do.

I liked the concept of making a Conscious Spending Plan instead of a budget. Almost no one actually makes a budget, and even fewer follow it. Instead, consciously decide how you'll spend your money. I especially like this idea of guilt-free spending, because too often the recommendation is to limit all spending. But people in their 20s want to live it up, not sit at home and pinch every penny! The Conscious Spending Plan lets you spend a certain percentage of your money on whatever you want, without feeling guilty, since you’re paying yourself and your bills first.

The book is written in the form of a 6-week action plan. Each chapter describes the tasks and reasoning behind them, and ends with a checklist of steps to take. Here are the weeks:

Week 1: Credit Cards. Check your credit, pick a good credit card, set up automatic payments, pay off debt.
Week 2: Bank Accounts. Open or assess your checking account, open and fund a high-interest savings account.
Week 3: Investing Accounts. Open a 401(k), make a plan to pay off debt, open a Roth IRA and set up automatic payment.
Week 4: Conscious Spending. Create a Conscious Spending Plan, track spending, and cut in the right places.
Week 5: Automatic Money Flows. List and link accounts, then set up an Automatic Money Flow to automatically fund the 4 categories of your Conscious Spending Plan.
Week 6: Investing Choices. Figure out your investing style, research investments, and buy funds.

The book gives a fairly in-depth explanation of the concepts and fundamentals of personal finance, but also contains plenty of examples of actual bank accounts and funds. There are many references to the 2008 recession and other events, so those parts of the book didn't age well.

30% US stocks
15% developed international stocks
5% emerging market stocks
20% REITs
15% government bonds

Buying a house
Houses are a poor investment compared to stocks; they’ve historically returned 0% after inflation. Before buying a house, determine the total monthly payment including mortgage, taxes, insurance, and maintenance. It should be less than 30% of your gross monthly income.
The total house price should be less than 3 times your annual gross income.
Buy a house only if you can live in it for 10 years. Make a 20% down payment and get a 30 year fixed rate mortgage.

To be fair, I probably should have listened to this one, but I did many of the other things Sethi points out.

Additional notes
Use savings for goals less than 5 years away.
Set your accounts for automatic deferrals, transfers, and payments to automatically direct money into retirement accounts, savings, bills, and a spending allowance.
Negotiate a higher total compensation (salary plus benefits) by researching compensation for comparable jobs and proving the value you bring to the company.

One thing I did was that I continuously talked to my friends about the book and we sat down together and completed a lot of the actions in sequence. By having those around me also aligned it made easier for me not to be tempted to go out. For example, we decided only to go out to eat for lunch once a week to stick to our plan.

Sethi also gives many tools and recommendations throughout the book to help you accomplish your goals.

About the Author
JUDY DETRICK is a calligrapher and designer living on the Mendocino coast of Northern California. She taught calligraphy and graphic design at College of the Redwoods on the Mendocino coast for more than twenty-five years and developed the Graphic Arts Certificate Program there. Her work can be found in several anthologies of calligraphy and graphic design, and she is represented in the Richard Harrison Collection of Calligraphy and Lettering at the San Francisco Public Library. She served as editor of Alphabet, the Journal of the Friends of Calligraphy from 2007 to 2010. A parallel interest of hers is letterpress printing, and under the imprint of the Attic Press she has produced several limited edition books and a wide collection of ephemera. She teaches regularly at the San Francisco Center for the Book, for the Friends of Calligraphy, and at other venues throughout California.

INTRODUCTION

Although digital technology today seems to have rendered handwriting obsolete, what is not obsolete is the distinct pleasure derived from receiving a beautifully penned envelope and opening a handsome handwritten letter. You may have admired a beautiful piece of calligraphy and wondered how to do it yourself. With a little effort, you can learn to craft lovely letters for every occasion.

This book will provide you with the first steps toward developing a calligraphic hand that is unique to you, attractive, and easy to read. The sample alphabet in these pages will help you learn the proper form of letters as they were created long ago, during the Italian Renaissance. Called italic, this is the hand most commonly seen on wedding invitations, hand-lettered menus, and other artful presentations. I will lead you through a series of exercises that will help you acquire a handsome italic hand, and I’ll suggest fun projects that will give you practice in a practical way. I’ll encourage you to try a variety of pens, inks, and papers to find the right ones for you. You will also receive guidance with layout and design, advice on addressing envelopes, and ideas for flourishes and other embellishments.

Of course, results are not instantaneous, and your handwriting doesn’t come with a spell checker or Delete key, but the more you practice, the faster you will improve! So let’s get started.

Terrific primer for Italic lettering

This book is a great primer for anyone wanting to learn the Italic hand. The strokes for writing each letter are clearly delineated, and the exercises are terrific. I especially like the way the author groups letters that have similar stroke patterns together for practice. Seeing the pattern between the simiar letters makes its easier to get the strokes down pat.

Good for beginners

Judy Detrick’s book Simply Calligraphy: A Beginner’s Guide to Elegant lettering is just as it says a beginners guide to calligraphy. “This little guide to hand lettering proves that calligraphy is as easy as picking up pen and paper.” The books starts with giving you an idea as to what tools you need to start. The information is very basic and it is kind of left up to you to research exactly what works best for you. The rest of the book is instructions that start with basic lines and curves to form the letters. It begins with the easiest lower case and progressively leads up to the hardest uppercase letters.
I would say this book is very good if you have never been introduced to calligraphy. It is very basic in my opinion and easy to understand. It should give you a foundation to start with. I wouldn’t think it would be beneficial for intermediate or beyond. It doesn’t get into the fancier or more artsy calligraphy. It does include swirls and such at the end that you can add to what you learn. I have some knowledge of calligraphy but it has been years since I did it. It is going to be fun to practice and see if I can pick it back up. It would have been nice if maybe some practice sheets would have been included in the book so one could start right away. I suppose you could start on plain paper but I remember having practice paper that helped you get the right angle and slope to the lettering, not just lines.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get started with calligraphy but not for anyone who already has knowledge of calligraphy. I do wish it had included a few more examples or exercises for some more advanced writing. I received this book at no charge from [...] in exchange for an honest review.

I have recently been working on Bible journaling and other mixed media art, so I decided that it would be the perfect time for me to learn calligraphy. Most calligraphy books are fast paced, difficult to follow and include many, many calligraphy styles, so when I received the opportunity to review Simply Calligraphy: A Beginner’s Guide to Elegant Lettering, I thought it might be a good match for what I was wanting to learn.

This book focuses on the most popular of all the calligraphy alphabets–the italic. Beginning with lowercase letters, the author has diagrams and instructions showing each letter grouped by specific letter types. After all the letters have been introduced, the author has sections on putting all the letters together, creating flourishes and some projects that you can create using the calligraphic letters.

I found this book to be a good introduction to the idea of doing calligraphy and a good in-depth instruction to doing a very popular alphabet set. As a complete calligraphy beginner, I really appreciated it. However, as a left-handed person, I wish the author had spent more time providing guidance to lefties. The main instruction, “Left handers may have to turn their paper to get into the proper position” is a little vague at best for those of us who are left-handed and newbies to calligraphy or hand-lettering.

I also wish that there were some blank practice pages in the back, even just one that I could copy for practice. That would certainly save some time web searching for practice sheets (the author’s suggestion). When I buy a book, I don’t want to have to then spend time searching the internet for what I need to complete the tasks in the book.

Otherwise, this is a nice introduction to the italic alphabet, and one that I look forward to practicing more with.

Beautiful Arrangements of Great Movie Themes

I'm playing through most of these pieces as my primary focus for piano study this year. There is significant variation in the difficulty of the pieces. I had to give up on the Forrest Gump theme but got the Exodus Song under my fingers in a couple weeks. All of the arrangements so far are beautifully composed, evoking the great themes from great movies long ago while at the same time giving a fresh arrangement that makes the Phillip Keveren version stand out.

The name of Poppy Z. Brite is well known to most horror fans. What some do not know, though, is that Brite hit the ground running as a fiction writer, and some of her best work so far is right here in this collection of a dozen tales (originally published as Swamp Foetus) she wrote between ages 18 and 24. The exigencies of long plot development and evolving characters that sometimes bog her down in the novels are absent from the short story form, where Brite's extraordinary talent for compressed, redolent imagery combines with her keen sense of narrative structure to create perfect little objets d'art. Stories like "His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood," "Calcutta, Lord of Nerves," and my favorite, "The Sixth Sentinel," are too exquisite to be missed.

Vivid stories, but weak endings

Poppy is a talented writer - she paints vivid pictures in your mind and makes you feel like you're part of the story. However, I often felt let down with the endings of the stories in this collection. I enjoy a build up to a shocking ending in my horror, but in this collection you often see the ending coming from a mile away. Other times the stories just end, and you wonder why there wasn't a little more meat to the conclusion. I know this may just be a pet peeve of mine, and I don't expect a "Sixth Sense" shock or twist at the end of every story, but I do at least like to read more than just a fade-away tale in the horror genre.

So Poppy, Poe, and Lovecraft walk into a bar...

Every once in a while you stumble across an artist who is in the wrong time... Poppy is one of those authors, and artist who seems as if she was born too late to be happy. From reading her stories you can envision her walking with the likes of Lovecraft and Poe. I assume they would discuss language, the beauty of the written word and the terrors of their hearts. Brite has a style that harkens back to the 1800's when flowing language and beauty could be found in even the darkest of tales. This collection of short stories is dark, gothic, beautiful, flowing, engaging and sad. Though she is labeled as horror, I wouldn't quite put her in that category, at least in this book. True there are vampires, murderers, and the undead... but they are never frightening... Brite looks at them all as a beautiful and necessary addition to a dark and morose world.

Although her writing is beautiful, and her stories thrilling to read, this book will not be for everyone. Her characters are sexually ambiguous, often leaning closer to the homosexual side, and although she never becomes overly graphic, I don't know that I would advise my husband read this. Also her characters tend to be very thin, fine boned almost androgynous males with questionable morals, and a penchant for eye shadow and lace. The closest mainstream author I can think of to compare her with would be Anne Rice with a darker view of the world.

Personally, I really enjoyed reading these stories, I loved her use of language, her sense of atmosphere and the brooding nature of her characters. The theme that seems to run through the book is one of both love and death, though the love is darker and more horrifying and the death is beautiful and erotic. If you read this book be sure to read the introduction by Dan Simmons, one of my favorite authors. It is both hysterically funny, and also does a good job of setting your mind in the right mood to proceed into the stories.

For fans of Poppy Z. Brite's early works in gothic horror, this collection of short stories is a killer starting point. As Dan Simmons describes in his tongue-in-cheek intro here, Brite excels in creating deadly scenes through a very "sensual" writing style - that is, she creates moods by deftly describing sights, sounds, and smells with a furiously exotic and descriptive use of language. Like the best of horror, Brite's stories are not necessarily scary in a slasher sort of way, but instill a sense of creeping dread that stays with you long after your reading experience is over. This book wasn't really what I expected. It's extremely intense but not really my cup of tea. I'm going to have to think about if I'll read the next one. It's well written but sounds like it's trying to match 50 shades and you just can't do that in a book like this.

Great Book for. Parents and School Personnel

I cannot believe I am the first to review this book. I picked it up from my local library and now I am here to buy my own copy, it is that good. Accept your child where they are in their brain based disability? Shocking idea! I am so happy to read this from an MD. He gets it! wonderful book that should be in every school and parent library, ASD, ADHD, anxiety disorder (and other diagnoses) parent or not!

On priestly celibacy: "There's never been much call to allow priests of the Latin Rite to marry." Equally irritating are countless non sequiturs, sloppy editing, and an idiosyncratic bibliography in which a German text is recommended with the qualifier "Only kidding." Misleading, contradictory, inappropriately irreverent, and not recommended.

Most theologians would not have attempted such a juxtaposition of sublime theology and simple devotionsat least in the space of approximately 300 pages. But this little Catholic encyclopedia reminds us that the average reader has questions and interests that academics may overlook. It also reminds us that Catholicism is a mixed bag of intellect and imagination, of doctrines and practices, of personalities and popes. For example, Johnson manages to fit the visions of St. Catherine Laboure, a simple French sister, into his context. Johnson is an art historian, and it is interesting to have that kind of perspective when describing Catholicism; his principal headings (faith, worship, culture, customs) keep the ark orderly. Solidified My Decision to Join the Church

During the late 90's, I was investigating a number of Christian faiths. For many years I was bouncing around from Protestant church to Protestant church with no real clue as to what I was looking for. Becoming Catholic never entered my mind. Eventually I ran into a Catholic friend who explained a few of the basics of the Church to me. Intrigued, I began to study on my own and found "Why Do Catholics Do That?" The title seemed straightforward enough, so I picked up the book and read it from cover to cover. It was amazing. Kevin Orlin Johnson's book answered all of my major questions about the Church and most of my minor questions. I had read a number of other books up to that point and none of them gave me answers as honestly or inoffensively as this one. It didn't try to hammer anything down my throat. Instead, it gave me answers in plain English and with no intent to brush me off as "just another Protestant." After reading the book, I decided to enter the RCIA process, where I entered the Church at Easter in 2000.
I can honestly say that this book was the decision maker for me. It is written in a way that isn't too "bookish" or intellectual for the casual reader, yet has a good amount of information in it. The writing style used, which has a lot of humor in it, lessened the blows of what some consider "cocky Catholicism." Another reviewer felt that in her original review this book came across as too cocky. I understand what she is talking about. I've met quite a few people with that cocky attitude. That attitude was one of the major things that turned me off from the Church originally. This book to me, however, wasn't too cocky. I enjoyed it. It gave the reader information in a straight manner. I also found nothing anti-Semitic about this book, as another reviewer mentions.
With this book, I learned that a number of the things that I was taught as a child about the Catholic Church was mere propaganda or, in most cases, misinformation. A lot of what I thought I knew about the Church was actually a misunderstanding of practices and beliefs.
I believe this book, with its simplicity, could easily challenge some of the harder hitting Protestant theories about the Catholic faith. Although it doesn't really go into any major theological arguments, it openly explains why Catholics do the things they do. It's hard to argue with someone when they are straightforward and honest with their beliefs. Perhaps that's what we need a little more of in the world today.

My Favorite Catholic Background Book

This is my favorite "Why do Catholics" book, and I have read quite a few, as I was raised Catholic and had to learn to defend my beliefs when my parents moved to the Bible belt in my late teens. If I had known about this book then, my life would have been much easier.

Dr. Johnson's book is much more entertaining and thorough than work of a similar nature, such as Karl Keating's better known books. Dr. Johnson converses with the reader, which makes the writing style engaging and memorable; he does not say use the dry approach of "some people think this," but rather uses and approach of "We Catholics believe." He does not discuss beliefs of other religions, except when comparing the different approach used for compilations of scriptures. This makes me more comfortable in recommending to books to other Christians, unlike Keating's work, in which the terms used sometimes appeal slanderous to people from denominations such as Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses.

This is a book of Catholic practices and religious beliefs and explores illustrates from where they came. It does not address moral theology, but is more concerned with issues such as "why does the Old Testament comprise these books," "why is there a Pope," "what is the official stances on alleged apparitions," "what is the roles of saints," ect. But is also has fun tid bits of information that many Catholic information guides fail to address, like the use of incense, the dress of clergy, and terms used for the religious. It also explains popular devotions and their history; such as The Way of the Cross and the rosary.

Amazon recommended it to me for some time. I wish I bought it sooner, but I thought that it looked too basic to be a wise investment for me. Then some one gave me a gift certificate for Christmas and this book was at the store; I flipped though it and found so much entertaining trivia, that I purchased it on the spot- wishing I had listened to Amazon sooner.

I have since given them as gifts to people who wanted to learn more about Catholicism, and contrary to a few opinions expressed form other reviews here, they did not find the book offensive, but appreciated it. I highly recommend it. The broad range of information it contains makes it an ideal reference for the uninitiated and curious, as well as for the person who has had much experience and education in Catholicism seeking to fill in any gaps of knowledge.

Uncritical in Approach, but Still Solid

This helpful book is authored by Kevin Orlin Johnson, a PhD in art history. He has a firm grasp on church history and on topics like art and culture and he does a good job explaining many of the Roman Catholic customs and practices that often confuse those who aren't Catholic (not to mention many Catholics themselves!). He does use a rather uncritical approach, however, so his book will be especially beneficial to those who prefer a more conservative view of the issues he covers (such as sacraments, funerals, popes, ordained ministry, monasticism, vestments, holy objects, etc.). For those who lean toward a more progressive stance on many of these issues, this book will probably not be suitable. For them, I recommend an approach such as that of Greg Dues in CATHOLIC CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS: A POPULAR GUIDE (also available on Amazon). Catholicism is a religion that is much more pluriform and rich than many are willing to admit. Indeed, the various approaches of different authors are probably a sign of the church's continuing relevance today. This review may not be received positively by some persons, but as a professional religious educator and a life-long Roman Catholic, I think we honor Christ and the church when we admit our differences without marginalizing or excluding one another.
