Excellent first book on nonlinear programming.

I am a graduate student, working on a PhD in Optimization (nonlinear programming). This book provides an excellent first exposure to the field of nonlinear programming. It is full of "easily visualizable" 2 or 3 dimensional examples, which greatly aid in the development of strong intuition. Although the intended level of this book is the advanced undergraduate level, it serves as a very thorough and useful companion to any graduate text. This book almost single-handedly helped me pass my qualifying exam in optimization, mostly because it "made all of the pieces fit together."
I heartily recommend it to _anyone_ interested in learning about nonlinear programming.

Peressini and Sullivan are not enough to make you Uhl

This book takes an unusual path to the usual results in optimization. Though refreshing in some ways, the standard results--Kuhn-Tucker conditions for non-convex programs--are not achieved until the last chapter. Little of the preceeding six chapters can be skipped without ruining this development! D.M. Greig, by comparison, develops this result in her first chapter, in a book at a comparable level. With Peressini et al, you sink weeks into learning restricted convex programs; an interesting niche, but one best studied once the main results are in hand.

Inspiring

After seeing a documentary on Jon Huntsman I wanted to read more. This is a man that came from very little in life, but by working hard and always handling his business dealing with honesty and integrity he could feel good about everything he achieved. At a time when it seems like everyone wants to take the shortcut in life, regardless of who you trample along the way, this book is a great reminder that at the end of the day you have to live with yourself. The book is a reminder that if you handle yourself with a strong moral character you will succeed both personally and professionally.

About the Author
Sean O'Callaghan was borh in Killavullen, Co Cork in 1918. He was commissioned in the Irish Army in 1936. On leaving the army he baceme a journalist in Fleet St, as well as in Nairobi. He published his first book, The Easter Lily, in 1956, and became a full-time writer. He died as To Hell or Barbados went to press, in August 2000.

Sean O'Callaghan, a former member of the Irish Republican Army, gives an unblinking historical account of the vicious brutality of Cromwell's invasion of Ireland. He also shines a bright light on the British abhorrence of Irish Catholics, citing English pamphlets during the civil war that portrayed Irish Catholics as intellectually and morally inferior. O'Callaghan goes on to detail the systematic, decimation of Irish defenders and the relentless persecution of the innocent others who were transported to Barbados to face forced labor on sugar plantations as slaves. In his description of Irish transport to Barbados, O'Callaghan includes an account that is no less hellish than the horror of the African middle passage. O'Callaghan provides stark accounts of the misery of Irish life on Barbados, describing white slavery and forced labor on sugar plantations. My wife told me about the Irish slaves after she learned about them in a college history class. Being of Irish decent my interest was piqued.
I am amazed that this part of history is not taught in the US school system.

Not the easiest read, though very well written. It is hard due to the reader's emotions in response to the brutality of Irish slavery. Read it because this history must not remain hidden.

Many of the greatest Japanese blade makers are represented in this volume, from the earliest koto ("old sword") masters such as Yasuie (12th century) and Tomomitsu (14th century) to the Edo-period smiths Nagasone Kotetsu and Kiyomaro. These blades, cherished as much for their beauty as for their cutting effectiveness, were equipped with elaborate hilts and scabbards prized for their exquisite craftsmanship and materials, including silk, rayskin, gold, lacquer, and alloys unique to Japan, such as shakudo and shibuichi. Japanese armor is also fully surveyed, from the rarest iron armor of the Kofun period (5th century) to the inventive ceremonial helmets made toward the end of the age of the samurai.

"Art of the Samurai: Japanese Arms and Armor, 1156-1868" is the catalog from a seemingly unprecedented exhibit of samurai armor, swords (nihonto), sword fittings (koshirae), and war accoutrements displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2009, in partnership with the Tokyo National Museum and the Agency for Culture Affairs of Japan. The exhibit featured over 200 pieces of samurai art, including 34 National Treasures and 64 Important Cultural Properties, on loan from some 60 different museums in Japan as well as from private collections.

This book, compiled to commemorate the exhibit, is quite a production as well with over 350 pages including extensive, scholarly text covering the history of metallurgy in Japan, the political developments of the samurai era, and the evolution of samurai art in these two contexts. The photographic representation of the collection is impressive to say the least, with about 75 pages of armor, 75 pages of nihonto, 50 pages of koshirae, and 40 pages of clothing, saddlery, and artwork. Although the exhibit includes nihonto from the years spanning 1156-1868, a good deal of it is from the earlier part of that epoch, with a few good examples of early chokuto from the 5th to 8th Centuries, and then one noteworthy tachi or katana after another from the Muromachi through Kamakura eras including National Treasures by Kanehira, Nobufusa, Sukezane, Yoshimitsu, Rai Kunitoshi, Rai Kunimitsu, and Masamune to name a few. The text accompanying each piece includes measurements of nakago and sori, full translations (in both kanji and English) of the mei (tang signature), and a fairly detailed discussion of the significance of each piece. As another reviewer here says, the matte photographs do lack the kind of detail you'd really like so that you could see the hada (steel grain) and hatariki ("activities" of the tempered steel) of each blade, but they are by convention black and white and overall they're pretty good. There is certainly no other book in English that features such a noteworthy collection of mostly older blades from the warring eras, the periods when the quality of Japanese swordmaking is often considered to have been at its peak, so this is simply a must-have for any student or aficionado of nihonto. Like similar volumes from other exhibits, the catalog features koshirae that in contrast are mostly newer, with some wonderfully ornate Edo and Meiji period fittings made in the post-war era in which such artistic work flourished.

I own several of these museum catalogs from exhibits that have taken place here in the U.S. in the past few years, and this is clearly the largest and most impressive collection. The overall production quality of the book is very fine, the pictures are quite good, and the level of detail in the text written by Japanese scholars is unparalleled. These kinds of books often don't stay in print forever, so I would highly recommend the purchase while it's still available for the paltry sum of $40. Easily worth it for such a compendium.

This is an important book, I think, because of what it teaches us about Japan.

One day, when I was fourteen or fifteen my grandfather pulled me over to the book shelf and handed me some books and said that I 'had' to read them, implying that not doing so would condemn me to a life of ignorant darkness. One was The Red and The Black, another, Conrad's Lord Jim, I think and perhaps a third was Madame Bovary.
His point was well taken, in retrospect, if not well made, and grounded in a belief that there is a certain canon of knowledge that has a place in a person's education.
As such a library of books should be accumulated that help to inform one about the world.
I would put it to you that this is one of those books. As an art book, quite frankly, it leaves a bit to be desired despite the superb construction of its binding and the quality of its paper. For this reason one is happy that the book is made in Japan, because it has the look and feel of something well made and substantial and unlikely to explode or be recalled for any other reason. Actually, my complaint concerns the editorial choice to go with a matte finish rather than glossy, and not to photograph the exhibited swords in color.
This is a book ostensibly about art, after all and unless we are talking about black and white art, by God, I want to look at color reproductions. There probably is an excellent rationale for using a matte finish rather than gloss for the numerous excellent reproductions of Samurai 'Art' ranging from aforementioned swords to copious amounts of elaborate armor, highly decorative sword guards, fittings, scabards, clothing, and other accoutrements of war, as well as reproductions of period scrolls depicting more of the same. These are accompanied by mostly edifying text giving contextual information as well as interesting provenance details. Apart from some minor typographical irritations, e.g. in a discussion of a certain type of pig iron it is first identified as zuke and then as zuku, the accompanying text is generally lucid and informative. One does wish, however, that a broader discussion of the actual functionality of the pictured items had been undertaken for, while some of it was obviously ceremonial in nature, it is not made clear if all of it was, and it would be interesting to know just how effective the various armor and weapons were in their assigned roles. The weight of one set of the armor was listed once, I think it would have been interesting to know what each of the pieces at the exhibition weigh.
Likewise, this Metropolitan Museum of Art publication, includes many pictures of swords. A major constituent part of the Samurai sword is the pattern that appears on the polished metal. These patterns are nearly indistinguishable as pictured: A major shortcoming.
Nevertheless, this is a book worth owning. Not just for its large number of excellent, if matte finish, reproductions and extended essays but also for how well it demonstrates the very Japaneseness of these items. (Oh, and by the way, the book includes material earlier than 1156 as a means of tracing the evolution of the various forms of armor and sword blades.)
What is perhaps most impressive about this collection is the amazing, utterly amazing, continuity of forms and aesthetics that can be observed from the earliest items to contemporary Japan's artwork or, more exactly, cultural signifiers.
Such a unified cultural thread is really quite extraordinary. Consider, for instance, the English whose civilization is arguably as old as Japan's. Yet can any one identify a single continuous ancient English theme that runs through its culture today (Putting aside Shakespeare who one argues was channeling the Greeks and doing after a gap of more than a thousand years)? Englishness was once defined by its affinity to tea, a Chinese import, and to fish and chips (the latter, a new world import). Her artists, while excellent at times, hardly define the culture (Turner, Constable, Hogarth) do they? Dickens might have captured more than a moment in time, but one could hardly call any aspect of modern England Dickensian could one?
The Japanese, on the other hand, not only defined themselves through an aesthetic typified by the Samurai (one part of a greater contiguous whole), but have also taken its motifs to heart and woven them into the present day culture.
For this reason, what it says visually about the Japanese, I recommend owning this book. Also, I suspect it may become collectible; although I am unfamiliar with art books with Samurai themes so can't be sure.

Amazing history and cultural reference

This book is more than just about weapons and armor, it is also a very thorough examination of Japanese culture and its martial history. I learned more about Japan from this book than from books specifically dedicated to Japanese history.

As for the actual topic of the book, I was mainly pleased with the explanations of how weapons and armor evolved due to changes in combat methods over time - swords used for horse-mounted combat were cut down for on-foot battles, and armor construction evolved as firearms became a sudden, prominent, and permanent aspect of war.

There may be better books on Japanese sword typologies but in my opinion this is the ground-floor for anyone wanting to study the topic. Another sadly out-of-print book that nicely compliments this is Classical Weaponry of Japan by Serge Mol, which focuses on pretty much every hand-to-hand weapon type except for the sword.

This is a big, gorgeous book that was well thought-out and leaves zero room for improvement. I only wish I could have seen all this stuff first hand at the Met.

One to have

If there is one book that I, as a professional developer recommend that anyone interested in VB, let alone data-access should have, it is this one. The book is extremely well structured, very readable, packed with examples and above all, a true developer handbook. You'll find what you want in here, from SQL and DAO to ADO and OLE. Great bit on class programming too. I know the new edition is out but sometimes you do not always work on the best platforms as a developer. You need a reference - I've got another 3 or 4 for VB and they do not cut it compared to this. If there is a slight detraction, it is the extensive coverage of 3rd party controls...I seldom bother with CD-demos, they're already out of date. However, as important as the book is Jeff's accessibility, he's never failed to answer an E-mail (except when I mentioned Kenneth Copeland) on a technical query and also runs a good web-site.

I have been coding in ADO .NET with C# for about a year before I picked up this book. My new project is in VB .NET so I saw this book as a chance to brush up on VB .NET syntax. I found the book easy to read and also found many places where I was introduced to new concepts and easier ways of accessing data than I had discovered on my own. I have recommended this book to several people already and will continue to do so.

Shadowed Strength is my first novel and it really has been a labor of love. I originally wrote the book when I was sixteen, and over the last twenty two years, it has evolved into what you're about to read. I love reading young adult paranormal romance books, and this story flowed out of me with excitement. Wendi Wilson is mom to two rambunctious boys, two cats, a snake, a guinea pig, and a fish. She lives in Southern California with her husband and kids, writing in every spare moment she gets; those moments not already consumed by volunteering for PTA, team parenting various sports teams in baseball and football, and reading as many books as humanly possible.

A WONDERFUL START TO A SERIES. CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE NEXT ONE.

I ran across this book in a reading group. The cover and blurb drew me in and I’m so glad I decided to read it. There are tons of books about teenagers who suddenly discover they’re special. Unfortunately, the books themselves aren’t. It’s all on how the characters are portrayed, and this one fits the bill.

The main protagonists is sixteen year-old Melanie. She’s overweight, has a huge inferiority complex, and has been bullied most of her life by Sissy. Even though Sissy is nothing but a mean, spiteful person, she is the epitome of what Melanie wants to look like. It doesn’t help that Melanie also has the hots for Jeremy, someone she’s known must of her life, but he only sees her as a friend. Unfortunately, Sissy has her eye on him too.

One fateful day, at a party, Jeremy strolls in with Sissy on his arm, who proceeds to belittle and bully Melanie. Upset, Mel takes off on foot to go home, in the dark, alone, and along the way, she’s attacked. Someone has had his eye on her for awhile,and now it’s his time to make her his. Her savior is a huge dog Melanie has never seen before. Who is the dark man that assaulted Mel? And why is he still stalking her?

I have to admit, I figured most of the plot out pretty fast, though I was sidetracked at one point. But I didn’t care, as I really fell in love with the characters. I enjoyed the banter between Mel and her best friend, Tara, and caught myself chuckling a few times over their antics. Wendi Wilson did an awesome job portraying the insecurities of a teenager in high school. Even though it’s been 40 years since I graduated high school, she took me right back to all the teenage drama.

Most of the story is about Melanie and coming to terms with her body, finding the guy that’s stalking her, and the developing relationship between her and Jeremy. The paranormal elements were slowly blended in and I anxiously waited to see who Melanie really was. I was mildly surprised to find out the real answer. This book does leave you on a cliffhanger, and I definitely want to read the next book in the series.

I didn’t find anything really wrong with the tale, other than some very minor proofreading issues. The plot was fast, the characters relatable and likeable, and it was well-written. I highly recommend it for YA lovers of the paranormal and I give it 5 feathers. Well done.

Why I loved Shadowed Strength

Prologue
This was one fantastic prologue, I normally never mention these. Fear trickled over my spine and I could sense the danger Mealnie was in.

The book is sooo easy to read - I don't mean that the language is simple but the writing style is perfect and the story flies swiftly.

Melanie
Every girl will be reminded of their teenage years after reading about Melanie.
Melanie was slightly overweight, was trying to find herelf and had a bitchy nemesis.
Her character development was depicted well. She went from shy, insecure, non confrontational to confident & someone who can take a stand for herself.

Creepy Mystery Attacker
Melanie was dealing with a serious problem here and her reactions were believable. The mystery was written well and it had a red herring too. I think it set a good example when Melanie planned to overcome the situation instead of tolerating torment.

Tara She was EVERYTHING a best friend should be and that's the highest compliment I can think of right now.

Jeremy
Usually boys in high school are portrayed as nerds, jocks, jerks or some combination of these traits.
Jeremy was swoonworthy, a knight in shining armour, how most of us fantasized our First Love should be. He was kind, patient, funny, protective, considerate, I have a never ending list of praise...

Complete Package
This book had a lot of elements like mystery, paranormal, young romance, friendship, family, the search for your identity and they come together perfectly.

Cliffhanger
The story has a massive cliffhanger but fortunately, I have the sequel and can get started soon.

This was a perfect blend of YA romance & paranormal and is highly recommended to readers of both genres.

Melanie - from inadequate to extraordinary

Melanie is a normal sixteen-year-old girl, living a normal life and going to a normal high-school - as far as she knows. She has a crush on a normal, howbeit very attractive boy, who regards her only as a friend - as far as she knows. Her biggest problem – up to this point - is a poor body-image, due in large part to a malicious classmate who has belittled and persecuted her from early childhood. Melanie’s greatest assets, when the story opens, are her loyal best girlfriend and her loving mother. With their help, she is overcoming her shyness and groping her way to a normal social life. All of these factors, and several new ones she does not yet know, come together at a party that changes everything.
The narrative is confident and steady. The language and style are appropriate to an adolescent readership – as far as I know: the running conversation between the girls seems natural. There are a few strong words, but no profanity. There is some violence, but it’s brief and not too graphic. The moral tone is consistently high, both in dealing with teenage sexuality and in regard to respect, concern and consideration between friends. It won’t teach young readers anything untoward – unless perhaps reliance on the supernatural.
For me, the plot is a bit slow; while the suspense builds, actual events are few and far apart: by the time they arrive, the surprise is quite gone. The dialogue and action tend to be repetitious. I admit I don’t know what teenaged girls like to read, or whether they obsess over anything besides boys. For my own part, I’d like them to have a little more intellectual stimulation.
