About the Author
Michael Swan is a writer specializing in English language teaching and reference materials. His interests include pedagogic grammar, mother-tongue influence in second language acquisition, and the relationship between applied linguistic theory and classroom language-teaching practice, and he has published a number of articles on these topics. Michael has had extensive experience with adult learners and has worked with teachers in many countries. He is a Visiting Professor at St Mary's College, University of Surrey.

Caution. This edition does NOT have an answer key

This is a good book for elementary students of English. Intermediate and advanced students of English, though, may not find this book very useful.
Beware! It does not come with an Answer key. So if you are studying English on your own, buy the edition that comes with an answer key ( The Good Grammar Book with answers [Paperback]).

Beautiful Workbook

I was very disappointed that this book became so much more difficult to buy after its apparent reprinting as the Oxford English Grammar Course: Basic. The exercises are very thorough and interesting. Students pretty well master concepts after completing practice. I have based many of my own exercises on the types of practice offered here. My students love the book, and many have asked to buy it. They may not recognize the merits of the exercises, but they like the drawings, I think. My favorite lesson in this book is the section on present perfect versus simple past. I've always struggled to understand the idea that the present perfect looks at the present and the past. The eye visual and exercises forcing students to decide whether a situation remains true based on the use of the present perfect or simple past provide an excellent example of processing instruction.

Thorough survey of precision manufacturing

This book presents a very thorough survey of the field of precision manufacturing. Key concepts in precision machine design as well as precision manufacturing processes are discussed. Understanding the former is critical in fully understanding the latter, and this is one of the few books that talks about both aspects in considerable length. I really liked the way the book began with an overview of the historical development of manufacturing technology and their motivators. It helped in setting context for the discussions that followed, and demonstrated that while the basic drives of precision have remained the same, as better and better precision is needed in products and systems, the techniques of achieving them keep changing.

The authors spend a few chapters discussing the various sources of precision (and imprecision) in machine and systems, such as thermal errors, vibrational errors, and structural errors. There is an excellent discussion on error mapping, which talks about how to combine different sources of errors in determining the net error in a mechanical system. These chapters provide good background and context for the subsequent discussion on precision manufacturing processes. The book focusses on mechanical material removal processes, and talks about processes on the conventional scale as well as on the micro scale. There is a brief discussion on semiconductor and nano scale processes as well.

I felt that this book gives an excellent overview of precision manufacturing. The field is quite broad, and the authors do not try fully span it, but instead try to highlight its most important concepts. Copious references are provided, and material from diverse sources are pulled together. Some of the concepts discussed, like vibrations for example, are covered in much greater detail in other texts (which are acknowledged), but the point of this book is to show how these different concepts influence manufacturing processes and systems. I taught a graduate course based on the material in this book, and I felt that its scope was quite appropriate for the class. However, it has to be mentioned that it does not fit the profile of a traditional textbook, as it does not have many examples and no end-of-chapter exercises. But this is to be expected as the topic does not lend itself to simple problems (strictly speaking, most of the problems in the field are research problems and are discussed in academic journals, quite a few of which are cited in the text).

This book will serve well as a reader for a graduate course, and as a reference for design and manufacturing engineers.

Excelent coverage of wide array of topics. Very, very informative. It is written for grad level work so this is not for someone who does not already have a very good background in regular manufacturing processes.

Yet for most contemporary New Age and popular writers, Tantra is celebrated as a much-needed affirmation of physical pleasure and sex: indeed as a ""cult of ecstasy"" to counter the perceived hypocritical prudery of many Westerners. In recent years, Tantra has become the focus of a still larger cultural and political debate. In the eyes of many Hindus, much of the western literature on Tantra represents a form of neo-colonialism, which continues to portray India as an exotic, erotic, hyper-sexualized Orient. Which, then, is the ""real"" Tantra? Focusing on one of the oldest and most important Tantric traditions, based in Assam, northeast India, Hugh B. Urban shows that Tantra is less about optimal sexual pleasure than about harnessing the divine power of the goddess that flows alike through the cosmos, the human body and political society. About the Author

Hugh B Urban is Professor of Comparative Studies at Ohio State University. One of the leading western scholars of Tantric religion, Professor Urban is the author of several books which include Magia Sexualis: Sex, Magic and Liberation in Modern Western Esotericism (2006), Tantra: Sex, Secrecy, Politics and Power in the Study of Religion (2003) and Songs of Ecstasy: Tantric and Devotional Songs from Bengal (2001).

Essential

In this book Hugh Urban distinguishes himself as one of the foremost scholars on Tantra. This book stands within the must-read list for anyone interested in the subject, even though the topic, Assamese Tantra might be a little specialized within the field itself.

First of all it needs to be said that this is a scholarly work. So this isn't some corporate New Age cultural misappropriation or the pontifications of a Swami. It is rather the result of rigorous scholarship. So don't expect anything else.

Unlike a great deal of scholarship out there, this work remains readable at all times. There is no excessive delving into esoteric and quite frankly boring lists and minutiae common to other books on the subject.

Also, Urban utilizes many, many approaches and theories in this book, in ways that are dazzling. I will not provide many details because I would prefer you read the book for yourself and not rely on my flawed regurgitations, but his utilization of Foucault and feminist theory in understanding this subject is exceptional.

Building off the previous paragraph, the chapters of this book focus on a vast array on subjects, although they are obviously not individual essays crammed together, there is a consistency and fluidity throughout.

Above all, I am impressed with Urban's modesty in this work. There are other amazing Tantra scholars out there, but Urban manages to avoid some of the barely perceivable arrogance exhibited by some others. While I personally am not that sympathetic to the shrieking accusations of "Orientalism" towards anything and everything written that doesn't toe the line of Indian Neo-Vedanta Orthodoxy, it is amazing to see an author that manages to be sensitive enough to such a controversial subject, all while making points that need to be made.

I can't recommend this book enough. A must read for anyone in the field

Mostly a good choice for learning OpenCL

OpenCL Programming Guide is the 2nd book (to my awareness) being published, which deals with the new and exciting standard by the KHRONOS Group: OpenCL. The goal of this book is to provide the reader with an extensive walkthrough of the standard, providing explanations to complement the standard's specs. The authors of the book dim it "a pragmatic guide for people interested in writing code", and that it is.

The book is at its first edition, and it shows. Throughout the book there are typos, and what can only be explained as 'copy & paste' originated mistakes. Some of the code samples contain generic errors such as memory leaks or incorrect remarks, and some of the figures simply do not convey the intended concept, or are erroneous. The majority of errata I personally reported dealt with these types of errors, which are arguably acceptable (for a first edition) as they are not regarding the focus of the book, however, the book also contains some errata that does touch the actual focus, like an incorrect explanation (e.g. reported issue #14 on pg.132, and reported issue #4 on pg.65), or incorrect usage of returned information (e.g. reported issue #8 on page 88).

On the other hand, the book does provide good insight on a vast portion of the standard. Although it claims to cover the entire spec, the level of this coverage is inconsistent and in some aspects completely lacking (e.g. the explanation of clEnqueueTask() could have been accompanied with a concise example, but in turn ended up as a short sub-section). On the portions with most interest, i.e., OpenCL's support for data-parallel algorithms, the book does provide extended information, and adds to the OpenCL specs, by clarifying the concepts.

The 2nd part of the book, which was added rather close to the final release of the book (from the eyes of a SafariBooksOnline RoughCuts reader), provides 9 case studies of OpenCL usage. Some of these are purely pedagogic (e.g. chapter 15), but some provide more real-world examples of how OpenCL can be used, and optimized (especially for a GPU). These add another dimension to the book, and contribute to its relevancy.

On a closing note, I do think that the book is worth the while. It is currently the best option besides reading the specs, to learn the OpenCL APIs and OpenCL C programming language, and despite the shortcomings I've mentioned, it does manage to provide the gist of OpenCL, and add insight to the standard.

This is a really good book. I will definitely buy the next edition!

The heavy book with the thin green cover is a "must read" book for beginning OpenCL developers. Experienced OpenCL developers could find some chapters interesting too. The book can be used both as day to day reference book and as a manual.

The detailed introduction (chapter 1) enables the reader to understand the essentially important thing - the design of the technology (OpenCL standard v.1.1). It is considered in the book from 4 sides which are reviewed in the connection with each other: platform, execution, memory and programming models. If you are the novice in OpenCL, I urgently recommend you to read introduction firstly.

The narration continues with the "Hello World" example (chapter 2). It is big enough and divided into several subsections. Each of them we can consider as simple steps to create a real OpenCL application. I like it. After 1st an 2nd chapters, I guess, it is hard enough to NOT understand how to write your own OpenCL software. Sure, in this case you need to use some reference book (or the text of OpenCL standard), but from this point you are able to do it without a special assistance.

The next several chapters represent the mentioned by me so called "reference book". In particular, chapter 3 gives a detailed account of OpenCL platform, devices and context; chapters 4 ad 5 represent in detail OpenCL C programming language (operators, types, keywords and other things which you could find in any other programming language); chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9 describe in detail remained components of the technology: kernels, memory objects, images, events and so on. Well, I've concluded that chapters from 3 to 9 could be use as a real day to day reference book. For me it is quite useful.

To tell you the truth, the chapters 10 and 11 and 13 I've skipped, because interoperability with D3D and OpenGL, and embedded development with OpenCL are not interesting for me, but for somebody it could be useful too. The chapter 12 concerns the details of the C++ wrapper API: all staff in cl.hpp header file are briefly but well described.

The second and most interesting for experienced developers part of the book describes real cases of OpenCL using. Here 9 OpenCL-implementations of the specific algorithms are well described. It looks like all of them have been taken from the real author's software. Good. Some of the algorithms are illustrated with explicative figures. I think this part of the book with case studies could be a separated book. I just want to noted that I would glad to see more case studies, especially with vectors and matrices operations.

In addition, I want to mention chapter 20 "Using OpenCL with PyOpenCL". In recent times adopting of python in high performance applications is more and more wide. There are many techniques to improve the performance of python applications, but using GPGPU in intensive computing parts of application could become real help for python developers.

Also, it could be interesting to add chapter concerning using WebCL. Sure, nowadays WebCL is not so widely used, but the next year (2012) promises to be an year of WebCL. I hope.

To sum up, what I like in this book: organization of material, good introduction in OpenCL, detailed "Hello, world" chapter, appropriate case studies, detailed "reference book" part, print quality. Dislike: too soft cover, the lack of WebCL chapter, the number of case studies could be bigger.

Excellent book for OpenCL beginners.

For people who know nothing on OpenCL and little on heterogeneous programming, this is a must-have book. The books cover a lot of OpenCL stuffs, including basic concepts, API calls, and programming in OpenCL C language. And in the second part of the book, a few application using the OpenCL programming platform are presented, in which OpenCL optimization skills are discussed and we can see as a new standard OpenCL could be very promising in future. This book assumes the readers have C/C++ programming experience and does a great job on introducing OpenCL to these audience.

Aside from the excellent introduction and programming guidance, as a beginning to intermediate programmer using OpenCL, I wish the book can have more material on the following few aspects:

1. The book does not cover too many optimization techniques. The book is to teach you how to use OpenCL but not how to optimize the code. This is understandable because OpenCL is a technology still in its infant stage. But adding those could definitely improve people's interest in OpenCL and meet needs of those more advanced readers.

2. Debug technique. Debugging a kernel in OpenCL can be a huge pain! You cannot step into the kernel to trace it. I wish to read more debug techniques.

3. The code samples are downloaded using CVS and it seems like there are problems when using them. It also lacks of detailed readme files.

4. OpenCL platform/hardware comparison, say nVidia:AMD:Intel:QUALCOMM on OpenCL.

5. More use case studies on mobile platforms.

6. Future of OpenCL. As a new technology/standard, what challenges it is facing and where it is heading to.

This book is probably the first complete OpenCL programming guide book. And I highly recommend it.

The 2nd Peanuts Book Ever!

I don't know where or how you're going to get the 1st Peanuts book, but if you do, please let me know! Anyways, this book is the early years of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Schroeder, Patti (no not Peppermint Patty who would come into the picture years later), Voilet, and Shermy. Also, Linus is introduced here as a baby. The characters look a little different than what you're used to since many of these cartoons originally date from 1952 and 1953. Lucy is kind of cute with her big eyes (no Psychiatric Help booth yet) and Snoopy was still a little puppy (he hadn't yet climbed to the top of his doghouse but he knew how to drive Charlie Brown and Schroeder nuts!). Anyways, a must for your collection if you can get your hands on it!

I loved peanuts as a child

I was a huge peanuts fan as a kid. And I had a lot of the books. Eventually, I got out of the phase, but when the movie was released, I found myself going back in. I loved peanuts as a child, and it is still my favorite. I love the old school peanuts, when snoopy was a cute little pup and patty, violet, shermy were bigger characters. I love when the series started and the kids were really little. Lucy was there, but she wasn't as in your face as she is today. Schroder and Linus were babies, and things were a lot different. I think the earliest peanuts strips were the best, and this book is a great representation of those strips. There are some really funny stories here...like about bare soup and dolly abuse. If you're a peanuts fan, or hoping to get your kid into the series, the first three books in the reprinted series are the best!

Hysterical! I'm really enjoying this book. These are the Peanuts I remember that make you laugh out loud. Lucy especially is a scream! Schultz was a genius. Get this book. You won't regret it.

About the Author

JARED D. HARRIS is an Associate Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and is a Senior Fellow at Darden's Olsson Center for Applied Ethics. He is a celebrated professor who teaches both the required MBA Strategy course and the required MBA Business Ethics course, in which he also serves as course head. Jared's research has been published in a number of refereed academic outlets and highlighted in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the New Yorker, as well as other media outlets in the United States, Canada, Germany, India, Portugal, and the UK. His academic career follows a distinguished business career, first in consulting at several leading public accounting firms, followed by a stint as a CFO for a small technology startup.

MICHAEL J. LENOX is the Samuel L. Slover Professor at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. He is an award-winning professor who teaches and serves as the course head for the required first-year strategy course in the MBA program. I bought this to take a class at Darden and it was great. Short and to the point. It's not meant to be an exhaustive study on strategy so I recommend you get that elsewhere and use this as a reference guide to get to the point when doing the analysis.
