Always Fun Work by rich Larson
By Tim Janson
No artists today combine humor and horror with such enjoyable style as the team of Fastner and Larson. Zombie Sexual is solo project for Rich Larson which shows off his garishly fun style which is heavily influenced by old `B" movie horror films, particularly those drive-in style films of the 1950s and 1960s. Different from the usual, polished work by the team, Zombie Sexual features primarily pencil work sketches by Larson, although there are a handful that feature finishes with a side-by-side comparison to the pencil piece.

The pieces in the book feature a mix of women in position of power or action and those that are in bondage, about to suffer a dastardly fate at the hands of some fiend. Thus one page gives us a beauty battling a zombie with a shovel while the next page finds a buxom beauty being lowered into a pit of ravenous undead as a gleeful mad scientist-type leers.

Actual calling this a solo project is a bit misleading as the half-dozen or so finished pieces to feature Steve Fastner's inks. One of those is a tribute to legendary "B" filmmaker Ed Wood's notoriously bad film "Plan 9 from Outer Space" featuring Tor Johnson rising out of the grave as Vampira shambles past.

Plenty of great zombie action in the usual fresh, fun adventurous style that you've come to expect from Rich Larson.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, USA TODAY, AND CHICAGO TRIBUNE • A masterly work of literary journalism about a senseless murder, a relentless detective, and the great plague of homicide in America

NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FINALIST • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • The Washington Post • The Boston Globe • The Economist • The Globe and Mail • BookPage • Kirkus Reviews

On a warm spring evening in South Los Angeles, a young man is shot and killed on a sidewalk minutes away from his home, one of the thousands of black Americans murdered that year. His assailant runs down the street, jumps into an SUV, and vanishes, hoping to join the scores of killers in American cities who are never arrested for their crimes.

But as soon as the case is assigned to Detective John Skaggs, the odds shift.

Here is the kaleidoscopic story of the quintessential, but mostly ignored, American murder—a “ghettoside” killing, one young black man slaying another—and a brilliant and driven cadre of detectives whose creed is to pursue justice for forgotten victims at all costs. Ghettoside is a fast-paced narrative of a devastating crime, an intimate portrait of detectives and a community bonded in tragedy, and a surprising new lens into the great subject of why murder happens in our cities—and how the epidemic of killings might yet be stopped.

Praise for Ghettoside

“A serious and kaleidoscopic achievement . . . [Jill Leovy is] a crisp writer with a crisp mind and the ability to boil entire skies of information into hard journalistic rain.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times

“Masterful . . . gritty reporting that matches the police work behind it.”—Los Angeles Times

“Moving and engrossing.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Penetrating and heartbreaking . . . Ghettoside points out how relatively little America has cared even as recently as the last decade about the value of young black men’s lives.”—USA Today

“Functions both as a snappy police procedural and—more significantly—as a searing indictment of legal neglect . . . Leovy’s powerful testimony demands respectful attention.”—The Boston Globe

“Gritty, heart-wrenching . . . Everyone needs to read this book.”—Michael Connelly

“Ghettoside is remarkable: a deep anatomy of lawlessness.”—Atul Gawande, author of Being Mortal

“Riveting . . . This timely book could not be more important.”—Associated Press

“Leovy’s relentless reporting has produced a book packed with valuable, hard-won insights—and it serves as a crucial, 366-page reminder that ‘black lives matter.’ ”—The New York Times Book Review

“A compelling analysis of the factors behind the epidemic of black-on-black homicide . . . an important book, which deserves a wide audience.”—Hari Kunzru, The Guardian

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for February 2015: There’s a statistic that surfaces early in Jill Leovy’s fundamentally important book Ghettoside that should catch your attention: black men compose about 6% of the country’s population, yet they are the victim in nearly 40% of homicides. And who’s killing those black men? The answer is most often other black men. Leovy, a writer for the Los Angeles Times, explores the culture of black violence, specifically in South Central LA, describing a world that seems to exist hermetically sealed off from the rest of the city. With nearly zero mobility and little policing, the people of South Central are left to fend for themselves—further amplifying the devastating drumbeat of gangs and violence. Leovy builds her book around one family’s story: Wally Tennelle, an LA cop, has refused to move his wife and kids out of his Watts neighborhood. Then his youngest son is murdered (unlike most murders in the area, this one was covered by the local media). Through the gathering of evidence, the roundup of suspects, and the trial that ultimately comes to be—all spearheaded by John Skaggs, a very dedicated and capable LA homicide detective—Leovy makes the argument that what places like South Central need is more policing, not less. They need more attention—not debate, finger pointing, and inaction. – Chris Schluep

An Important and Essential Book That Will Broaden Your Understanding
By Lita Perna
Gettoside was a word used to by a Watts gang member to describe his South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. The author writes that Gettoside is both a place and a predicament. It is a place where black boys and men are safer in jail than on the streets. Ghettoside is also a frame of mind. It is a place with a culture of violence where the heroes are seen as the villains; the villains are seen as the heroes and all the victims are seen by one detective as some father's child.

By the time you finish this book you will know the heroes (detectives, including those whom the author calls ghettoside craftsmen whose involvement, dedication and self sacrifice is the stuff of which legends are made) and the victims (the focus here is on a good boy, the murdered 18 year old sheltered son of a homicide detective) and the addicts, the whores and the gangster-villains. You will better understand the police culture, and neighborhood culture and what they are all up against. You will understand why there are so many murders.

This is more than a story about heroic and tenacious homicide detectives' almost impossible task of identifying, tracking down, arresting and aiding in the prosecution of the drive by shooter of an 18 year old boy; it is an illuminating history and an exploration of a culture of lawlessness and violence and the multigenerational tragedies of its victims.

Author Jill Leovy, award winning reporter and editor for the Los Angeles gives startling and sickening statistics. She states that lawlessness is its own kind of order and where the criminal justice system fails to respond vigorously to violent injury and death, homicide becomes epidemic. "Wherever law is absent or undeveloped---wherever it is shabby, ineffective, or disputed---some form of self-policing or communal justice usually emerges." She says reformers focus on the rights of defendants while being blind to the under enforcement of violent crime. The author writes that police are preoccupied with nuisance crime and lax when it comes to answering for black lives. In poor urban centers those who live in minority enclaves settle their scores outside the law.

*During the 1960s the number of people sent to prison for criminal homicide was less than half the number of homicides. From 1994-2006 suspects were arrested in just 41% of the 3,300 killings involving black male victims in Los Angeles.*

The author does not preach. She shows. She explains. She tells true stories that will break your heart. Crime witnesses are terrified to testify because they and their families are threatened, beaten and often killed. Mothers weep over children who join gangs for protection or for the teenage allure of girls, guns and excitement.

According to the author, blacks who make up only 12 percent of the U.S. population, account for nearly half of all homicide victims.

The Southeast's per capita murder rate is eight to ten times the national average. The majority of the victims are black on black. So why was the budget for police overtime cut 57 percent? For detectives, working odd hours is essential. The author writes of budget cutbacks that eliminate necessary overtime and equipment. How can one do a job if the office phone don't work? Why would a detective have to live out of his sedan for two days when his unit lost the salvage cars they hoarded? When Detectives aren't issued departmental cell phones, they purchase their own. Detectives buy their own pads, pencils staplers, keyboards, calendars and binders. One detective purchases his own fax machine and printer for the office. Local appliance dealers provide video machines for interrogations.

This book is an eye opener and a heart breaker that will change the way you see black on black crime in America and the detectives who devote their lives to seeking justice for its victims.

Maybe the book should be titled, "Ghettocide" because it is about the physical, emotional and spiritual death that happens in pockets of cities all over America.

"Nothing else matters after working murders."
By Bella Rosa
Jill Leovy's theory, in a nutshell, is that "men [kill] one another to settle disputes or exact revenge in the absence of a trusted legal authority." Even as she details the awful statistics - in 1993, black men age 20-24 died by homicide at a rate of 368 per 100,000 - she maintains that the lack of police presence in minority neighborhoods drives young men to take matters into their own hands.

I get that gangs have stepped in to monitor and control neighborhoods in the absence of other local authorities, but the result is a casualty count that rivals a literal war zone. Leovy uses the story of Bryant Tennelle, shot in the head while walking down Eightieth Street, to humanize the incomprehensible numbers. Bryant's father, Wallace Tennelle, himself a homicide detective, and the detective assigned to the case, John Skaggs, illustrate the changes in the LAPD over the years and the frustrations of working in South Central. Leovy doesn't sugarcoat the problems of bureaucracy, misunderstanding and apathy, but she's also very clear about the bravery and dedication of men like Skaggs, constantly working for justice in a neighborhood where 20 young black men were killed in the 30 days before Bryant Tennelle was shot.

It's an extremely timely topic. Leovy tells a compelling story very well and raises a lot of issues that deserve careful thought.

A dark and violent true picture of South L.A.
By Neal Reynolds
I was born and raised in Fullerton, Calif., about 25 miles from L.A., and by the 1960's spent quite a bit of time in and around the city although I stayed away of course from South L.A. I still understand much of what Jill Leovy shows us of the area. This is indeed important reading. This is stark reality. I strongly recommend this to all readers who are seeking understanding of our violent times in all parts of the country.

The Yacoubian Building, by Alaa Al Aswany

The Yacoubian Building holds all that Egypt was and has become over the 75 years since its namesake was built on one of downtown Cairo's main boulevards. From the pious son of the building's doorkeeper and the raucous, impoverished squatters on its roof, via the tattered aristocrat and the gay intellectual in its apartments, to the ruthless businessman whose stores occupy its ground floor, each sharply etched character embodies a facet of modern Egypt one where political corruption, ill-gotten wealth, and religious hypocrisy are natural allies, where the arrogance and defensiveness of the powerful find expression in the exploitation of the weak, where youthful idealism can turn quickly to extremism, and where an older, less violent vision of society may yet prevail. Alaa Al Aswany's novel caused an unprecedented stir when it was first published in 2002 and has remained the world's best selling novel in the Arabic language since.

Review
"Top of my list is The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al Aswamy (Harper Perennial). The book has been a best seller in its native Egypt and throughout the Arabic world since publication in 2002. Set in downtown Cairo at the time of the 1990 Gulf War, it reveals modern Egyptian life through the eyes of a diverse range of characters an aristocratic playboy, a gay newspaper editor, a religious zealot, childhood sweethearts all of whom live in the same apartment building. Cairo hasn't been so vividly - or sexily - evoked since Naguib Mahfouz's Palace Walk. " --The Guardian

A Fantastic Book...and a word of caution.
By Bee
Bad news first:

I found this book a little difficult to get into for a couple of reasons. One, I am not at all familiar with landscape of Egypt. Second, although I am marrying an Egyptian, and have somewhat of a familiarity for Arabic names, it was still a bit confusing to keep track of each of the characters -- especially with most of them having a nickname or title attached to their name in various parts of the story. I found myself having to back track during the first 30 or so pages to keep each character straight, which was a bit frustrating for a seasoned reader with a supposedly high comprehension level. I know, I know: what should I expect from a book translated from Arabic, about Arabic people, and taking place in an Arabic world? Still, I thought that it merited a warning...

Good news:

This was still an absolutely gripping novel. For those like me who may struggle with the names or places and get a bit frustrated in the initial pages, the story is well worth it. I was soon immersed in the lives of the characters, and began to care for them as if I knew them personally. I was able to relate it to what I know of Egyptian culture, and it opened my eyes to aspects of the culture which I have not personally seen.

In the larger scope of things, it really makes you think about the political/religious/ethnic and just general social issues that surround us. It allows one to think outside of the box and experience a life or lives that you ordinarily would not be able to. Although very sad in parts, it also contained great happiness, and allows you to truly see a beautiful culture at its best, at its worst, at its most twisted, and at its most innocent. A very honest, and very enthusiastic 5 stars.

An absorbing and poetically-written book
By Gen of North Coast Gardening
This is one of those books that comes along once in a great while and has the power to take over one's life for the week or so it takes to read through the book completely. The characters are likeable and relatable, the plot both surprising and inevitable, and the writing is poetic and foreign in a beautiful and intriguing way. Recommended.

Mahfouz Revisited and Egypt Updated
By Arthur C. Hurwitz
Alaa Al Aswany is a social realist writer of Egypt with a style and a methodology not unlike that of Naguib Mahfouz. The difference is, however, that he portraying Egypt in the long term aftermath of the Free Officers' coup de etat, the Arab nationalism of Gamal Abd al-Nasir and its social reforms, and years of corrupt emergency rule. All in a country where the relevance of the Arab nationalism of the 1950's and 1960's is in the past, and largely irrelevant to the real life lives of the Egyptian people.

The title, and the building which is the foci of the novel, is a name and a building with non-Egyptian/Arabic name and an origin in a more cosmopolitan and liberal Egypt of the past. The characters represent various sorts of Egyptian personality types in the downtown area: a rich homosexual, a potential aristocrat of the old pre-Nasir regime lapsed into decadence and stagnancy after falling from relevancy in the new regime, a rich "self made" owner of a chain of stores, one of which is in the ground floor of the Yacoubian Building, and on the roof, representatives of the new and also very poor Egypt: a young woman whose father has died and thus is forced to take a job which includes paid sexual harrassement to support her family, the son of the doorman who is dilligent in his studies and preparations to become a police officer, a servant in the building who is renting a shack on the roof of the building so he can set up a shirt-making store, and others.

What all these characters have in common is that each character makes some sort of dramatic leap from the status quo character portrayed the begining of the novel to some fate, either more promising or resulting in the character's fall from some sort of interim grace. It seems to me that Al Aswany believes that the 50 years of dictatorial rule in Egypt and the 10 years of emergency rule (the novel takes place in 1990) under Mubarak, caused all of the segments of the Egyptian society to become corrupt and decadent. By showing various sorts of Egyptians of various socioeconomic classes, regional origins, and religions, he attempts to illustrate how the country's dictatorial regime has forced and continues to force every slice of the society into corruption, stagnancy, decline and/or decadence.

When the book opens its milleau to us, it is assumed that this dictatorial/decadent/stagnancy state-of-beirng, and mind, has gone on for a long time, for as long as any one can relevantly remember.

Each character represents a different philosophical response to this state-of-stagnancy and an eventual attempt to deal with it. Either to overcome it through love and real interpersonal engagement, or to continue on the same road of decadence and stagnancy, which ultimately leads to the death of the character which is an allegory for Egypt and Egyptian society, honest hard work and dilligence which is thwarted by the corruption and class system of the regime leading that character to first an abstract idealism, and that idealism to his death, another character thinks he can outmanuever the true powers-that-be in the regime, only to discover that he is just as powerless and leverageless against the regime as any of the other less powerful, less influential, or less wealthy characters.

I liked this book but would have trouble understanding it if I had never been to Egypt and was not familiar with either Cairo, the history of Egypt and the evolving urban landscape of Cairo, and Egyptian society. Although the book has literary merit, its primary interest would either to Egyptians and other Arabs, who could "fill in the blanks" not discussed in the novel itself, or people interested in Egypt and its own cultural responses to its current condition. Also, the literary merit of the book is only relevant from the point of view of someone either part of or interested in Arab culture, Egyptian society, and the current state of things in the Arab world. That is why I gave it four starts.

Kayla, Evelyn, and Trina have been on-and-off-again girlfriends for many years, but the lines of true friendship will be crossed, the knives that go into another friend's back will cut deep, trust will not apply, and no one will share their dirty little secrets. With enough backstabbing, finger-pointing, and disrespect to go around, this trio sticks to their motto of "What she can do, I can do better; and whatever she has, I want a piece of it too." Much competition is thrown in the mix, and jealousy is so thick that there will be no place for anyone to run when the mess hits the fan. Only then will they attempt to put their many differences aside, but when severe damage is already done, it may be possible to forgive, but certainly not to forget.

BFF: Best Frenemies Forever is the perfect title for this book
Kayla, Evelyn, and Trina have been friends for many years. Each has their own secrets.
This book has backstabbing, secrets, jealousy and deceit.
This book is a true example that will have someone asking are we true friends? Be careful who you claim as a true friend..

The characters in this book were great.

The story line will have you turning the pages not wanting to put down the book.

A Very Enjoyable Read
By K.Waden
Kayla,Evelyn and Trina have been best friends for a long time.Although from the outside it looks like they have such a close relationship, each woman holds a secret that can be explosive to all those around them. Can these women remain friends once the secrets are out? or Will they realize that they are really just Frenemies?

Once again Brenda Hampton has spun a tale of deceit and treachery. The characters in this story provides a great example of how you should always be careful of who you label a friend. The drama was explosive from the gate and continued throughout the book,The ending left me anticipating part 2 of this series today...Another Great Job by Brenda Hampton, she never disappoints.

What u say!!!
By zc
OMG, OMG I can't wait for book two. You took friendship to a whole new level. I don't believe these women. Why would your friend have to provide for your financial security? I believe our paths are already forged for us. You always have choices and options in life, it is the one you choose. Everyone of these ladies made mistakes, but I don't believe Kayla did that to Cedric, I think it was Evelyn. I don't want to tell the book, hurry up and purchase this one. This one will make u think about your own BFF. Be very careful who you give that title to, and ask yourself did they earn it?

Preface

Where are no prerequisites to this book beyond an interest in labor-management relations. It has been designed to serve as an aid to all readers who desire a basic understanding of unionism in its natural habitat. With such a thrust, however, the volume focuses on certain areas, necessarily minimizing the treatment of others.

Labor Relations brings in, for example, sufficient economic material to allow a fundamental appreciation of the union-management process and stops at that point. Throughout, it has tried to make the various topic treatments short enough to be interesting while at the same time long enough to do justice to the subject. On the other hand, it in no way restricts itself to what is commonly described as collective bargaining. Its focus is on the negotiation and administration of labor agreements, with emphasis on the more significant bargaining issues as they now appear between the covers of the contracts. And these topics cannot profitably be studied in isolation. Labor relations can best be viewed as an interaction between two organizations—management and the labor union—and the parties to this interaction are always subject to various, often complex, environmental influences. Only after the reader gains an understanding of the evolving management and labor institutions, and only after the environment surrounding their interactional process has been appreciated, can he or she attempt to understand bargaining itself in any satisfactory way.

The book consequently begins with a broad overview of the general nature of the labor-management relationship as it currently exists in the United States (Part I). It then moves to a survey of the historical, legal, and structural environments that so greatly influence contractual contents and labor relations behavior (Part II). Finally, it presents a close examination of the negotiation, administration, and major contents of the labor agreement itself (Part III).

Through description, analysis, discussion questions, minicases (many of them with ethical dimensions) and selected arbitration cases drawn from the authors' own experiences, understanding of all these aspects of labor relations will, hopefully, be imparted.

This tenth edition, the first one written since Fred Witney's 1999 death, is marked by many changes—mainly additions, although all of the chapters have been given some streamlining and the new volume is essentially the same in size as its predecessors. Even in the four years since the ninth edition, developments in the field have warranted the inclusion of new material on card checks, labor's recent turn to different and more aggressive leadership, fast-track presidential authority and unions, major developments in public policy in the past few years, and the dues rebate controversy. I have also enlarged upon the prior treatment that Fred and I gave managerial health care cost containment, arbitration, the GM-UAW-Saturn relationship, and miscalculations in bargaining. Tax-deferred retirement savings plans are additionally now dealt with, as is the topic of the AFL-CIO and cyberspace. And the discussion of a host of other topics has, of course, been given a significant updating.

Many new visual aids are included also, as are an extensively revised bibliography, an amended mock negotiation problem, and a glossary.

Nonetheless, I have exercised self-restraint in the rewriting. Only changes that can be defended on the grounds of general improvement of Labor Relations have been incorporated. I have always firmly believed in the old Puritan dictum that "nothing should ever be said that doesn't improve upon silence," and also share with the late Calvin Coolidge the conviction that "if you don't say anything, no one will ever call upon you to repeat it."

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

When a book has reached the stage of a tenth edition, it stands indebted to so many people that individual acknowledgment is futile. As in the case of the prior editions, students, friends from the ranks of both management and labor, and colleagues at other educational institutions have offered constructive suggestions and many of these have been implemented. Rita M. Beasley, who cheerfully and competently provided many helpful services on behalf of this volume, does deserve a special citation, however. And so, for the same reasons, do the University of Delaware's Myrt Werkheiser and Nancy Sanderson.

Nor can the contributions of five outstanding Prentice Hall staffers—Managing Editor Jennifer Glennon, Production Editor Keri Jean, Managing Editor Judy Leale, Editorial Assistant Kim Marsden, and Acquisitions Editor David Shafer—go unrecognized. Most of all, I appreciate the support that Louise P. Sloane, my wife, gave me throughout the process: Everyone else will have to be satisfied with the acknowledgments; she alone may also share in the royalties.

Not a great book but better then others by this publisher
By Prime Reader
This is the first time I have not loved an Amazon textbook rental's quality. The book I received you can tell has been heavily used. It has quite a few markups and tons of stickers on the front and back cover. Note past rentals never had any stickers especially not multiple stickers on top of stickers on the covers. While this doesn't affect reading it's just not as nice of a book.

The book in itself is not that big. For the price that it is for sale and kindle copies you would expect much more. After receiving I wanted to return and get a kindle version since the book is pretty thin, text is fairly small and the pictures inside are all black and white. Unfortunately to rent the e-book of this its almost as much as buying the book. Its not Amazon its the publisher Pearson. Most of the textbooks I have had the pleasure of being assigned from Pearson are not well written, expensive and website support of the book is poor and costs extra unlike other textbook publishers. An example of Pearson is the PARCC test. I try to keep an open mind when I see a textbook published by Pearson but usually its a fail. Again this text isn't horrible like many of the other books by Pearson but the price of the ebook, the font size and the quality of the book received is not pleasing.

Wretched.
By Tim
This book is required for one of my classes, and to my eternal displeasure, used and referenced heavily for the class.

The writing is exceedingly dry, repetitive, and long winded. 40 pages (and these are large page sizes, too) to a chapter is very off-putting, and unpleasant to read.

Further, the text is just so horribly biased. I think, even if I were a huge union fan (I'm ambivalent), the book's sheer head-up-one's-ass approach would leave a sour taste in my mouth. The overwhelming amount of bias in the book is wholly unbecoming of a textbook, much less one used for higher level university courses.

Personally, the pervasive bias gives the text an unreputable vibe to me. It's such that I feel as if the authors are either trying too hard, or utterly fixated in the favor of Labor. Neither of those options make me want to accept the writing as authoritative. It feels almost like I'm reading a conspiracy theorist's blog - for class!

I'm on chapter three now; this is going to be a painfully long semester...

DON'T BUY SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS FROM AMAZON EVER IN YOUR LIFE
By VPDirector1
This book started to fall apart between 30 to 60 days after I received it. Amazon reprinted pages and had the book rebound which didn't work. It was so hard to keep placing the pages where they belong, and this wa also an aggravating process to follow as I worked through the book. I want to keep all of my school text books in my library but this book is meaningless to me at this point. I would encourage anyone to purchase textt books from other sources than from Google, its just not worth it, and a pain in the neck. If Amazon was to send me another copyy that would not fall apart, and I could put into my library, than I would say they did the right thing. However, the policy to return the book has far exceeded the 30 days. I don't want my money back, I just want a good book that will not fall apart when I turn the pages.
